I had an experience once that taught me that I was health rich beyond measure. This was about 20 years ago and at that time I was selling exercise equipment for a nationwide outlet in a mall in Southern California. I believed in the product and I enjoyed teaching people how to use the exercise machines and the benefits of a regular exercise program. I did not make much money but I enjoy helping people improve their lives and I always have and always will.

One day a very nice young woman came into the store and asked for me by name. She told me that I came highly recommended by a friend of hers who was very happy with the new exercise equipment I sold them. I thanked her and asked her “how can I help you?” She told me it was her husband who needed my help. She said that he would come by the store later that day and that she wanted me to assist him. I told her that I would be glad to help him.

She then told me that selling him on exercise and buying the equipment will not be easy that he is a tough customer. She said that he owns his own business and he was used to getting his way. She further said that he was recovering from a heart attack and multiple bypass surgeries, that she and the doctors were urging him to start exercising soon and he was resisting the idea. The doctors had said that he needed to make some changes in his life like an exercise program or they feared that the next heart attack may be fatal.

This very nice woman started becoming a little emotional. She said “our life is wonderful together I do not want to lose him just when everything is coming together for us and our children.” I assured her that if he had the slightest inclination to start an exercise routine that I would find it and move him to buy the equipment and get started. We exchanged a few more words, she thanked me and left.

Later that day toward the end of my shift the lady’s husband came into the store and asked for me. I met a very pleasant gentleman, middle aged, intelligent, successful but obviously ill and out of shape. I took him through the different pieces of equipment we had, explaining the features and benefits. At the same time I also explained how to begin an exercise program and its benefits.

He listened patiently but I could see that he would have rather been anywhere but here in this store talking with me about exercise and its equipment. Soon he was taking control of the conversation and steering it in the direction he wanted it to go. I knew I was losing his attention and before long I would not be able to help him or his wife and children.

He started talking about all his business success, his property and showing me pictures of his RV and their place in the mountains. He was really enjoying himself now as he talked about a motorcycle he had, his boat and many other things that he had acquired. I kept silent as he went on and on but there was a realization I was coming to about him and his situation that I could not fully put into words yet.

He was now finishing up and getting ready to leave the store. In another moment I was going get a handshake, a smile and his back as he walked out into the mall. But during the handshake I caught him up and I said “Before you leave I need to tell you something personal that you need to hear.” He looked a little startled and said “what’s that”?

I stepped just outside the store with him and said “Let me tell you something I have been thinking about while you were talking”. Here is what I said, “Everything you have, your business, money, property, house, cabin, RV, motorcycle, boat, your power, mean nothing if you do not have your health. They are only things that are worth less then the dust on the bottoms of your shoes without you. You could go out today, lose everything and get it all back, which could be easy for you. But you cannot buy back your health and not your family; they are what is important. And without your health even your family is in jeopardy.” I stopped talking and then stood there looking at him waiting for a reply.

I noticed he seemed a little red faced and a bit angry from the look on his face. I thought to myself that possibly I was going to have a complaint logged against me by this man. Then he started to talk “You know what, you have brought up something that I have not thought of in quite the way you put it, you got to me. I will be back tomorrow afternoon with my wife and we will pick out some equipment so I can get started, thanks.” He shook my hand again, turned and walked down the mall corridor toward the parking structure. He and his wife were back that next afternoon just like he said and we completed the sale with no further problems.

I still think about that incident in my life because it was a turning point of sorts for me as well as him. I had really not thought about what I told him until just that moment when I spoke to him and that realization came together just then. I myself had just recovered from a year and a half struggle with a cancer. It was the same prostate cancer that had killed both my father and grandfather.

It was a profound experience and I was of course elated that I had cured my cancer but until that moment in the mall I had not put any value on just how much it meant to me. The reality was that the experience of curing the cancer had made me rich beyond imagining. That experience gave me the ability to cure any disease and that is priceless.

I would never have to fear that some symptom I was feeling was a fatal disease. I would never suffer with a chronic disease. I would never have some doctor tell me you are going to be on this medication for the rest of your life. I would never have to face chemo, radiation or surgical procedures for cancer. And I couldn’t care less if I had medical insurance coverage.

How could I say that? Simply put, I learned to cure my own cancer by using traditional Naturopathic medical techniques. These Natural cure techniques were demanding there was nothing easy about it. It was as though I had taken on a second job. I was busy from the time I got up in the morning till I went to bed at night for over a year and a half. I’ve written before on the benefits of a sauna, so I am not going to go into the specifics at this time. This article will be about what section of your house you’ll be able to use as a “sauna space”. Many people may recognize where the most appropriate place to devote to your sauna, or some of us d not have a big enough house, thus what do is one to do?

First question one would ask is how much area would I have to devote to a sauna room? Take for example 2-person saunas. Once set up it only takes a four’ by four’ space. They can be plugged into a daily outlet, and heat up rather quickly and efficiently. Another consideration is how many people will be using the sauna at once? Ultimately how much actual space you have to devote to this space and the area you would like to position your sauna in will determine what size you get.

If ALL of your space is at a premium and it’s hard to figure out room in your house for a sauna space, contemplate a movable sauna. They are about the size of an overstuffed chair and fold neatly into a giant flat suitcase. Then when not in use, you can store them in a closet or beneath your bed. These are glorious for individuals living in studio or small apartments. I have been able to actually see one of these in action, and that they work very nicely. The ONLY draw back that I can see is that they are not going to look as nice as a hemlock or cedar sauna.

Another thought for placement of a sauna room area is outside. There are tons of outdoor sauna kits available, and these are simply just as nice as the inside units. They are assembled in a few hours and are extremely watertight. The outside type and style of saunas that I favor are the ones that have exterior finishes made out of bamboo. Besides looking really nice, the outside finishes are extremely rugged to any or all what the outside weather can throw at them. They are therefore nice looking and when they are assembled and together, they appear like a custom piece.

If you feel extremely ambitious, you can design or purchase plans to completely build your own indoor or outdoor sauna room from scratch. This can be more rewarding but if you are not feeling so inclined, or do not have the appropriate skills, maybe type of build is not for you. I know for my own personal tastes, I would rather buy a pre-assembled kit and just do some minor assembly.

Do not let the size of your house be the only consideration if you want to enjoy sauna room benefits inside or out. Could a Man’s Midlife Crisis be Hormones?

A male midlife crisis is often associated with “the male crazies” when men make decisions to that reinforce their ebbing youth and fights the winds of aging. Tony Horton and is P90X program, Tony Horton and his workout crew, all of them shredded, ripped, walking talking perfect physical specimens of fit humanity. They look as if they were carved from granite, as tough as tree roots and as flexible as yoga practitioners. All of it due to 90 day’s worth of exercise, a formulation that has been lauded as the perfect way to go from 0 to ripped if you can just do what you’re told, if you can eat right, sleep right, and most importantly, exercise right. So is P90X everything it’s said to be? Does it really deliver the results, and if so, why?

You ask Tony Horton, he’ll tell you it’s all due to the ‘Muscle Confusion’ idea he’s developed, where basically your body is prevented from plateauing due to always mixing up the kind of exercises and routines that you are asked to perform, day in, day out, month after month. Supposedly, your body will acclimatize itself to the same routine, and stop growing after a certain point of time. I don’t think so. Three months is not enough time for your body to grow used to anything, especially if you’re going from 0 to ripped. If you were already a body builder? Perhaps. Sure, Tony Horton and Beachbody need some marketing gimmick to help convince people to give it a shot, and that’s where ‘Muscle Confusion’ comes from, but in reality what you need to focus on is that you will be doing a truly intense amount of exercise in a very limited period of time. Consider this: most exercise routines advise that you work out some 3 times/week in order to allow your body to recover, grow, and adapt. P90X has you work out as hard as you can for 6 days/week, 4 weeks/month, for three months straight. It’s beyond intense—it’s insane, and your body will either break, your resolve crumbling, or it will freak out and adapt, grow and grow and grow in order to try to keep up with the sudden stresses and pressures its being subjected to.

Consider this: P90X is a complex series of routines that are interwoven together to form a beautiful whole. You don’t just do bicep curls and chest flies; rather, you integrate such well rounded and challenging routines as Kempo, yoga, stretching and core work with isolated workouts that brutalize your back, shoulders, chest, legs and arms. What happens is that your entire body is subjected to an intense, rigorous and concentrated blast of exercise. Your muscles get shredded, and unless you get enough sleep and nutrition, you’ll end up being a mess. Which is why we need to emphasize here: EAT YOUR FOOD, GET YOUR SLEEP, OR DON’T BOTHER. Seriously—this is such a high level workout that if you skimp on these areas you might as well not pick up a weight at all.

However, if you take it seriously, sleep a ton, eat a ton, and focus and do what you’re told, you’ll be giving your body the best shot it has to completing this workout regimen. Not that you’re guaranteed to succeed even if you do so—it’s just too intense, and most people will probably go in without the necessary conditioning. Starting a Fitness Boot Camp: The Right Exercises

In this day and age when the fitness bug has bitten almost every second person in the world, your fitness training business can really go places. By starting a fitness boot camp you can gain popularity as well as substantial amounts of money as a fitness trainer. Fitness boot camps have grown in popularity mainly because they offer an intensive workout experience amid natural surroundings. And in order to give the participants at your boot camp, that intensive workout, you need to choose the right exercises.

Warming Up

The exercise schedule should ideally begin with a warm-up session. This is because you will, in all probability be making the participants start early in the morning when the muscles are still taut after sleep. In order to prepare the body muscles for the actual exercises, warm-ups will thus be necessary, if you want to prevent any injury.

The main benefits of warm-ups such as stretching, before starting a fitness boot camp workout session are:

Increased muscle temperature and flexibility

Increased body temperature and dilation of blood vessels

Flexibility in joints and an improved range of movement.

The Exercises

Next, comes the all important workout session. This should ideally not be more than 45 minutes long so as not to exhaust the participants completely. The main types of exercises that you should look to incorporate are:

Push ups: this is a great exercise for the body, which helps to increase core strength. It affects the muscles of the chest, shoulders, arms, abdomen and legs.

Plyometric exercises: the vision behind starting a fitness boot camp is to make people healthy. These exercises are also aimed to do the same by improving athletic ability in terms of speed and power. The best Plyometric exercises are hops, jumps and bounding movements. For example you can ask the participants to jump from the top of small box and ‘rebound’ from the ground onto the top of bigger box.

Interval training: this involves alternate phase of intense and easy activities. While the intense activities help in rapid consumption of energy, the interval phase gives the body the opportunity to replenish the energy and oxygen reserves.

Core strength exercises such as abdominal crunches, sit-ups, side bends etc

Speed training with the help of different varieties of sprints, such as 10, 20 or 30 meter drills.

You can end each training session with some gentle stretching so as to help the participants cool down. Also obtain some feedback from them about the exercises they did.

Fun and Games

In the course of serious workouts, do not forget that you also promised the participants, while starting a fitness boot camp, a lot of outdoor activities that would add the element of fun and help in team building.

So, you can plan for team competitions such as a tug-of-war or partner exercises such as a three legged race. You can even set up obstacle courses and team relay races.

How to Cheat at Shaun T’s Insanity

“Wah wah wah,” everybody cries. “The INSANITY workout is too tough. INSANITY chewed me up and spat me out a broken shell of a man.” Oh, come on. Anybody can do INSANITY, and I’m going to tell you how. It’s true, fine, I’ll concede that if you do INSANITY in the manner that Shaun T expects, you’ll probably look like road kill by the end of the workout. But who says you have to do it that way? Here’s how to get through the sixty days of INSANITY without even breaking a sweat.

The key lies in gaming the Fit Test. Most people will foolishly throw themselves into this, trying as hard as they can to pump out as many Globe Jumps, Suicide Jacks, whatever. They’ll give themselves a heart attack, and then dutifully write their numbers down. Then, two weeks later when it comes to performing it again, they’ll see that their numbers haven’t gone up that much, or not as much as they hoped, and be crushed. Ha! Amateurs. The trick is to underperform on the first Fit Test. Cruise through it. Do a couple here, a couple there, and then if you did only 10% of the Brain Exploderators or whatever by the end of the minute, don’t worry. Because in two weeks time, it’ll be easy to more than double your results.

Second, during the actual workouts, listen to Shaun T. He actually tells you to take water breaks during the exercises, not only when it’s officially time. Sure most people hang in there, gasping and flopping about like fish out of water waiting for the official water break to come, but you can’t be blamed if you take Shaun T’s every suggestion to take a water break to heart? So yes, every time he suggests you stop if you need water, a breather, do just that. Hey, he’s the boss, right? You’re just following orders.

Third, become the ultimate stickler for form. Shaun T says over and over again to never compromise form. So don’t. Speeding up makes your technique sloppy, so go nice and slow, and be precise, exact. Make sure you are making perfect upward sweeps of your arms during your Suicide Jacks. Make sure each movement is precise, wonderful, a gorgeous example of what should be performed. Ok, you sacrifice speed and thus end up doing half or less of the reps that everybody else does, but again: Shaun T told you to watch form. So just do it.

If you do that, you’ll rock Shaun T INSANITY. Your Fit Tests will show incredible gains. You’ll ensure maximal hydration, and will never lose form. True, you might not break a sweat, but hey, perfection requires sacrifice. And the next time you hear some totally ripped INSANITY graduate boasting about how they nearly died doing the workout? Just snort from the comfort of your LAZY-BOY and shake your head as you guzzle down some more Coke and chips. INSANITY. It’s as hard as you want it to be, which means it doesn’t have to be very hard at all ;)
