Nutrition Articles : Dairy Farms Products – Stay in Shape and to Stave Off Disease

March 16, 2010

Dairy farms are farms where, usually, cows or goats are kept to make milk and products like butter, whipping cream and ice cream, which more often than not are high energy yielding products. Some other items that are referred to as dairy products in various nutrition articles include condensed milk, baked milk, cottage cheese, ricotta formula, evaporated milk, quark, whey, curds, buttermilk, frozen custard, frozen yogurt and lots more.

- Nutritional Value of Dairy Farms Products-

Here are some ways that show how dairy products really aid to maintain sound health:

- Milk and Calcium are good sources to keep the body trim: As per the results of recent surveys, the researchers have found that calcium causes the unwanted fat to shed in cells, and boosts the pace at which the unnecessary calories are burned.

- Milk contains the fat soluble vitamins -A (Retinol, for good vision and cellular growth) -D (for bone mineralization and aids in the absorption of calcium) -E (prevents cell and tissue damage) and -K (aids bone metabolism and blood coagulation.)

- Milk also contains the water soluble vitamins -B1 (Thiamine, maintenance of brain and heart) -B2 (riboflavin, essential for carbohydrate into energy conversion) -B6 (Pyridoxine, good for the nervous system) and -B12 (Cobalamin, for formation of blood and normal brain and nervous system function.

- Lower the chances of breast-cancer: CLA or conjugated linoleum acid found in milk inhibits the growth of ‘mammary tumors’ in animals. Also, post menopausal ladies with higher levels of conjugated linoleic acid in their fatty tissues and blood streams have 70% lower chances of getting breast cancer.

- Inhibit colon cancer: High intake of dairy farms products have been shown to lessen the risks of colon-cancer in both males as well as females by 40%. It is really a great advantage of dairy products since colon cancer is one of the major causes of death today.

- Help with hypertension: According to nutrition articles published in various health magazines, individuals having a high intake of dairy products in their diet lowered their blood pressure levels, which is (of course) one of the main causes of heart attacks and strokes. Moreover, milk products have also been found to lower homocysteine levels, which is a major factor responsible for heart disease.

- Fight IRS (Insulin Resistance Syndrome): Individuals who are overweight, have hypertension, high cholesterol, high blood-triglyceride and weak glucose metabolism are said to suffer from IRS. Dairy products have been found effective in dealing with this deadly syndrome.

- Inhibit the risks of growing ovarian malignancy: According to recent studies, ladies with a high intake of dairy showed a decreased chance of ovarian cancer.

- Keep teeth in good shape: Kids are often taught that milk helps build strong teeth, but few know that the calcium in cheese and milk actually fights the formation of plaque and aids to cover the teeth, which protects against cavities.

Besides all this, as it has been mentioned in many quality nutrition articles, products from dairy farms are the best way to fight brittle, weak bones.

So, when you select any of the various dairy products available, you can rest assured that you are doing a lot of good for your health.

Nutrition Articles : Fruit Facts and Nutritional Values of the Best Fruits to Enjoy Great Health

March 16, 2010

Fruits are considered to have highly dietetic value and they hold a fantastic source of essential minerals, enzymes, antioxidants, vitamins and phyto nutrients. Normally, if you want to find out all the benefits of these natural medicines, you would need to go through several nutrition articles. I can’t list all the resources I have gone through to find out which fruits are the best for you and are the most nutritionally crammed, (There’s a lot) but I will do my best to lay out the a few fruits that I, personally, feel are the best.

Some fruits that are packed with high nutritional content include apples, bananas, fresh apricots, dried apricot, berries (all of ‘em), dried figs, dates, cherries, peaches, lemons, guava, strawberries, watermelon and lots more. The fruit facts state that all these fruits can be digested easily by human bodies, and they all act as excellent cleansing tools for your blood and digestive system.

- The Fruit Facts and Their Nutritional Value -

• Apple: When having a look at nutrition articles on the internet, you will likely find that apples are the fruit that contains highest dietary content: 80-100 calories, flavonoids, potassium, phenolic compounds, and various other antioxidant phytochemicals. Taking an average sized apple a day will lower your insulin emission; decrease the bad cholesterol in your blood; lessen the risks of lung cancer; and help to flush out all toxins from your body.

• Bananas: Bananas are especially helpful to sports-people or athletes because of the electrolyte and potassium content they come packed with. They quickly refill potassium stores in the body and contain large quantities of the B vitamins and folic acid. Bananas diminish the risks of heart disease as well as kidney and breast cancers.

• Watermelon: Watermelon is absolutely perfect for hot summer days. As per fruit facts, in addition to quenching thirst, this fruit takes care of some of the main dietary needs of body. Although 90% of watermelon holds water, it consists of a great amount of minerals (calcium, magnesium, fluoride, iron, sodium and potassium) and vitamins (Vitamin C, B6, B5, B9, B2, B1 and Vitamin A).

• Raspberries: According to several nutrition articles, raspberries have huge value, not only for flavor and taste, but for nutrition too. Antioxidants found in raspberries aid in deterring damage to cell membranes by deactivating the damaging effects of free radicals. Retaining a good amount of ‘Vitamin C’, they are rich in nutritional fiber too, making them very helpful for optimal well-being and health. Low on calories and sodium, raspberries are a fantastic addition for any diet. Some other raspberry benefits include heart health, prevention of age related macular degeneration, cancer protection and inhibiting the growth of bacteria.

• Maqui Berry: Not the easiest berries to get your hands on but HIGHLY nutritious. More antioxidant content than any known fruit, 2-4 times as much as acai berries. Great for assistance in weight loss due to its strong detoxifying qualities. High in vitamin C, calcium, iron and more essential nutrients. Maqui also has a powerful anti-inflammatory effect. An excellent option for anyone suffering from joint or bone inflammation.

• Avocado: Avocado is also quite famous due to the rich content of Vitamin A and Vitamin C, which makes it an excellent anti oxidant. The fruit also traces lots of essential minerals such as magnesium, iron, calcium, selenium, copper, zinc, sodium, phosphorus, and manganese. Skin care and hair care are other major benefits mentioned in nutrition articles; the paste of avocados can be applied on rough skin or skin rashes to make the skin soft and smooth.

Incorporate fruits and vegetables in your daily diet and add years to your life. It definitely will improve your efforts to stay in good physical shape for longer.

Health, Fitness & Wellness Are Very Important to Seniors

March 16, 2010

If we are going to live to be 100 or more, then it is for damn sure that we want to be physically able to enjoy life when we get there. I am fond of the saying, children make choices but adults make decisions. If you are like most of us, you spent most of your life up til now, chasing the almighty buck and trying your best to take care of and provide for your family. If you had the time to take care of yourself, or even remembered to think about it, you were lucky. Now that you’re on the back side of 50, the short side of time, it’s time to do just that.

You want to keep on top of things, mainly your health. Also, exercise is very important. When you become a ‘Senior Citizen’, sitting around and watching the cars rust and the grass grow is actually ‘no where man’, and I mean Amen to that. Regular exercise keeps the heart healthy and keeps you focused.

You got to eat right man. Lay off the grease and the salt that have brought on some of ‘old timers’ life conditions already. Get a food chart for seniors and read it. Instead of fried, try boiled, broiled, or baked. Enjoy fruit instead of candy and remember the ‘No sugar added’ juices to keep glucose in check

Also, find a hobby and get out of the house on a regular basis. And by the way, there is nothing wrong with walking when you can instead of driving or riding. When I see those old fogies riding around the stores in those electric carts when there is nothing wrong with their legs I just want to throttle them. At an old age, the choice is either to wear out or to rust out. Your physical condition is expected to deteriorate a little at a senior age, but it would be better to go through it by being busy than rotting in bed. The simple exercise of walking can also lessen the amount of bodily toxins that may have accumulated. It also tunes and tones the muscles, especially the heart and bones.

A national survey of senior sexual attitudes, and behaviors in the United States has found that most people between 57 and 85 think that sex is an important part of life and that the frequency of sex, for those who are active, declines only slightly between the 50s and the 70s. The same survey also found sexual activity was closely tied to overall health, which was even more important than age.

If you have never been interested in herbal supplements or vitamins, you might be interested in knowing that the botanical kingdom offers a range of healing powers as well as breathtaking beauty. If you’re feeling a little puny or down in the dumps, you could try an anti-depressant like Prozac, or some form of psychotherapy, perhaps. But 7.5 million Americans who suffer from depression have chosen an extract made from a beautiful, bright yellow flower… St. John’s Wort.

Feverfew has been studied and found effective for the prevention of migraine headaches, reducing the number of headaches suffered by as much as 70 percent, or reducing the pain and controlling the nausea commonly experienced with such headaches.

Cleavers is a powerful and restorative herb for the lymphatic system; cleavers is beneficial in helping swollen glands, tonsillitis and adenoid problems. Internally and externally, it is effective in the treatment of inflammations including relieving skin conditions, rashes and burns.

Echinacea is a “preventative” herb. Not used in any modern commercial drugs today but it is heralded by many herbalists as one of the very best blood purifiers and an effective antibiotic. It is a broad based infection fighter, and it is considered an immune system stimulant which increases production of infection fighting T cells.

Coffee is America’s most popular herbal beverage; it combats drowsiness, temporarily boosts athletic performance, eases congestion due to colds and flu, prevents asthma attacks and enhances the pain-relieving effects of aspirin. Also, in a study, green and black tea appeared protective against fatty arterial plaque buildup.

Today, and for most of our lives, we have had a completely different outlook from the previous generations, we are more active, more demanding, and we have a longer life expectancy. Better known as ‘The Baby Boomers’. Now it is our turn to relax and enjoy the fruits of our labors.

Nutrition Articles : Why Gluten Free?

March 16, 2010

Personally, I have always been an advocate of whole wheat, but I have been seeing a lot of Gluten-Free-Diet ads and labels about lately. At the grocery store, on the internet, in restaurant menus and even at the Bakery with BIG exclamation points at the end (!!!) the signs are all around me. I’ve even seen gluten free pet foods. But if you had asked me, even a month ago, ‘exactly what is Gluten?’ I would’ve replied, ‘ I think it’s an ingredient in wood glue.’

Since then I decided to do some research on the issue and look into what all the hype was about. I found out that not only is gluten used as a stabilizing agent in some foods (Ketchup and Ice Cream) but that ‘Gluten’ actually comes from the Latin word for ‘Glue’. (I was close!)

Gluten is a protein that is found in many commonly consumed grains, including Barley, Wheat and Rye. It is what gives breads their chewy and absorbent qualities. When separated from the grain, it is used in some vegetarian diets, because it absorbs the flavor of the broth it is boiled or cooked in. For this reason it is used as a base for imitation meats that are made in China. It is also used to improve the protein content in pet foods.

So, what’s wrong with this common component of whole grain? Well, lets start with Celiac Disease. Celiac disease is an inherited autoimmune disease that causes the immune system to attack the villi (small finger-like protrusions) in the small intestine whenever gluten is introduced into the system. This prevents nutrient absorption into the body which causes symptoms such as anemia and fatigue.

If you aren’t afflicted with celiac disease, you may still be able to benefit from a gluten free diet. Studies have been done recently linking gluten to a number of negatives. If you suffer from Neuromyelitis, Osteoporosis, Multiple Sclerosis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Anemia, Ataxia, even Brain Fog or difficulty concentrating, you may be able to benefit dramatically by eliminating gluten from your diet! Even if a loved one suffers from Downs Syndrome or Autism they could benefit from ditching gluten!

Basically, if you suffer from Celiac disease, any chronic pain issues or cognitive fogginess, you should at least give a gluten free diet a try. This can be a bit tricky if you like to eat breads, pastas and cereals or drink beer, but it IS possible. In fact, it’s getting easier and easier as the gluten free diet is gaining momentum and manufacturers, restaurants and bakeries are all producing products with this new diet option in mind. There are gluten free breads, pastas, cereals as well as beers that are available. There are also grain alternatives such as quinoa, soy, rice, potato and buckwheat. Oh, and vegetables and fruits are gluten free so there is no need for concern there as long as they are whole and fresh.

In conclusion, though whole wheat definitely has it’s benefits, (like the fact that it is a great source of fiber, protein, iron, calcium and minerals,) for some people, it may be worth a shot to avoid it. If you have celiac disease, whole wheat and grains should be avoided entirely. If you happen to have any of the other issues listed earlier I would recommend giving gluten a seat on the sidelines for at least a few weeks. See if you start feeling any better. If not… well, then enjoy your whole wheat toast and bowl of Crunch Berries.

Home Health Care Employment – 5 Things You Should Know

March 16, 2010

Home health care workers are people in charge of caring for the sick, disabled and elderly in their communities. The work is usually performed within the homes or residential facilities of the people receiving care. The positions are widely available in every city, town, and suburb around the country. In fact, wherever there are people, home health care workers are and will continue to be in demand.

There are a number of reasons that people choose to seek employment in the home health care industry. Some people are attracted by the chance to help others in a very direct, even intimate way. Other health workers like the idea that you can get a well-paying job even without having a high school diploma. And, some like the flexible work hours that the position entails.

It is a good thing that many people are interested in working in this industry. The demand for health care workers continues to grow, given that the population continues to age. There will always be elderly people who need care. And, there will always be people who are mentally or physically unable to care for themselves.

If you are considering working in this field, here are 5 things you should know:

1. Know the difference between home health aides and home care aides

There are various types of positions within this industry. However, in general terms, the two primary types of jobs you can get are that of home health aide and home (or personal) care aide.

Home health aides usually work for certified health agencies that receive government funding and therefore must comply with certain rules in order to continue to receive that funding. These workers are under the management of a nurse or other medical professional, and they provide some limited health services.

Meanwhile, home care aides work for various private and public agencies. They are supervised by a social worker or other non-medical managers. While they do receive supervision from time to time, most of the work they perform on a day to day basis is done on their own.

2. Understand the benefits

People who appreciate flexible, non-standard work hours will often choose this type of position: in fact, you may care for the same person for months or years. But, it is more likely that you will travel around town each day, caring for 2, 3 or more people on any given day. The other, most obvious, benefit is the ability to really make a difference in someone’s life in a way that you cannot do with many other types of jobs.

3. Know that this type of work is not for everyone

Working in this industry can be very physically and mentally demanding. For example, you can find yourself heading home each day with a sore back due to having to lift the person you care for into bed. Also, the people for whom you care may not always be friendly or in a good mood.

4. You must receive training

You must receive training and pass a test to prove that you are competent to work in this field. Most training is “on the job training” and is conducted by registered nurses or other medical practitioners. Training does not exceed 75 hours in most cases.

5. You do not need a high school diploma to get a job

Never got your high school diploma? No worries! Working as a home health aide or home care aide does not require that you have one. Just complete the training and pass the competency test and you will be on your way!

If you need a job and have considered working in this industry, make sure you understand the requirements, benefits and difficult parts of this line of work. Armed with the right knowledge, you can make the right decision about whether this is the career for you.

Aromatherapy at Bathtime

March 16, 2010

Every Christmas you will probably end up with some sort of smelly to put in your bath, and the majority of these will have their ingredients based on Aromatherapy. The aim of these Aromatherapy Bath products are to make your bath time even more enjoyable and relaxing after a hard day at work or to rejuvenate tired muscles after being in the gym or working in the garden.

There are a wide range of aromas that you can choose from to help your body relax in the bath. The long list of off these include bath bombs, bath oils, bubble baths and scented soaps that will all contain natural ingredients that will help to rejuvenate the mind, body and skin while in the bath.

Probably the most widely used scents in Aromatherapy Bath products are lavender, lily or rose. Lavender is known to help relieve headaches, insomnia, tension and stress, while rose can give a feeling of wellbeing and happiness. Some other ingredients you might find used include foods such as cucumber, melon, peach, or apple, if these are all combined with chamomile which is well known to Soothe and relax you could have the perfect aroma to relax in the bath with. Floral oils like jasmine or rose oils, also make perfect bath concoctions. Jasmine can help to revitalise and restore energy.

There are some artificial scents out there that are made for the bathtub as well. However, it is wise to be careful with these substances. Many of these can irritate the skin. Therefore, it is wise to stick with the ones that contain the most natural ingredients, and ones that contain substances and oils in them that will not harm your body.

The most basic way to use Aromatherapy Oils at bath time is to use six to ten drops of your favourite relaxing essential oil in a bath full of water, perhaps lavender or rose, and then lie back, relax and let the good effects of aromatherapy directly seeps in to your respiratory, skin and nervous system to help relax you or to soothe those aching muscles. If you are planning on adding the essential oils to your child’s bath, it would be wise to only use half the amount of essential oil.

You could also add your own concoction of bath oil containing a number of oils. This is purely personal and you can choose your favourite oils. Remember that no two people are affected in the same way by the same blend of aromas or natural ingredients. Therefore, you may need to experiment a little before finding the exact remedy that is right for you in certain situations.

Some examples of these include to relieve anxiety add a few drops of Lavender, bergamot, Melissa, geranium, and ylang-ylang to the bathwater or to be more alert in the morning try using the herb jasmine in your bath.

Hopefully this article will have given you a brief introduction into how you could use aromatherapy at bath time to relax or revitalise., and that you will now start to look into using it in your own day to day life.

Tongkat Ali – More Than Asian Viagra

March 16, 2010

As with all forms of alternative therapies, the Tongkat Ali extract has more than its fair share of rumors, misrepresentations and misconceptions. Let’s see if we can square away some of the myths about Tongkat Ali extract.

All Tongkat Ali products are not created equally. Tongkat Ali extract is the strongest of all herbal remedies derived from the Eurycoma Longifolia tree grown in Southeast Asia. Other diluted products come in varying strengths. Tongkat Ali extract 200/1 is the most powerful all-natural builder of increased testosterone levels.

While Tongkat Ali has become renowned for increasing the sex drive and libido, it has served Southeast Asian doctors for many other purposes over the years. The herbal remedy, actually drawn from the 2-meter-long root of the tree, has been used to treat malaria, other fevers, headaches, arterial corrosion and anxiety. Overall, most of the regional doctors use the medicine for many general health issues.

The affect on male reproductive organs and libido gained Tongkat Ali extract the nickname “Asian Viagra.” With increasing demand in Europe and from North America, the production of Tongkat Ali extract has expanded.

The manufacturing and distribution process used for centuries has been replaced by modern technology, speedy delivery systems and new-age packaging. Tongkat Ali extract is now delivered in pill, capsule or liquid form. As an all-natural product, no prescription is required.

Unlike Viagra, Tongkat Ali works best when ingested on a regular basis. For an uplifting feeling of energy and sex drive that keeps users at the ready, Tongkat Ali should be used daily. Proper dosage depends upon the user’s age, weight and overall physical condition.

The Tongkat Ali extract raises the male testosterone level by overriding the body’s natural shut-off valves. By freeing the glands to produce more testosterone, test results show an increase of 30-50% on average.

Women have also begun to use Tongkat Ali extract. About one in seven sales are to women. For women, Tongkat Ali increases sex drive, tightens the vaginal walls and elevates energy levels.

Unfortunately, the once abundant crop of Eurycoma Longifolia trees has diminished. With the deforestation Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia, crops are limited to Malaysia, Indochina and Thailand. Malaysia is the largest producer of Tongkat Ali extract. Yet, the Malaysian government is considering legislation to protect the trees.

This legislation means that in the future, it might be more difficult to get quality Tongkat Ali extract at a low price. However, since the effectiveness of this natural remedy has been proven, particularly as an testosterone enhancer, it is probably certain that other asian countries will attempt to grow the trees to benefit from the increased demand.

The bark of the Eurycoma Longifolia also produces other alternative medicines. The effectiveness of the Tongkat Ali extract can be directly traced to the maturity of the tree from which the root was taken. The ideal age of the tree is 25 years old. At that point, the tree has reached its full height of 12 meters. The root runs vertically into the ground for two meters. A lot of manual labor goes into the excavation and harvesting of the region’s leading natural testosterone builder.
