Diabetes Treatment Type 2: How to Manage it Without Drugs

December 31, 2009

Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes, and over 80% of diabetics suffer from it.

Types 2 is usually found in adults but its increasingly common nowadays in many adolescents due to an excess of food, a sedentary lifestyle, coupled with no exercise.

How can you manage diabetes without drugs?

Before we go on, it is necessary here to state that you need to check on a regular basis your blood sugar levels. Do not assume your blood sugar levels are okay. Confirm it.

To properly manage your blood sugar levels, the first step must be you controlling your eating. Basically, diabetes is caused when the body over a period of time takes in more calories than it can handle. This impairs the pancreas and leads to insulin resistance. And since insulin breaks down the body’s sugar, an excess of sugar accumulates in the body.

As a diabetic, your daily consumption of carbohydrates has to drop. The reason as you already know is that the primary sources of sugars into the body are through carbohydrates. It is recommended that carbohydrates should only be 40-60% of your recommended daily food intake.

Once you reduce your intake of carbohydrates, the quantity of sugar available in the blood system will automatically reduce.

Diet should be kept to 1,500 - 1,800 calories a day of food. There are variances in calorie intake due to factors such as height, sex drive, age and a host of other issues. What is crucial is that you exercise self control in your food consumption so as to have healthy blood sugar levels.

You must reduce your intake of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats as this can erase the effect of the lower carbohydrate intake. You can substitute the two fats with saturated fats.

Your next step is exercise. This to me is the most important.

The benefits of exercise is that it does not just have the ability to burn off the excess calories and sugars in the body, but also reduce your appetite which makes it easier to reduce your blood sugar levels.

So what kinds of exercises are best for a diabetic?

In a research conducted it was observed that exercise regimen that was a mix of aerobic and resistance training produced the best results on glycemic levels. Though aerobics and resistance training can be conducted on their own, the best results were gotten when they were combined.

The amount of exercise you need to carry out is not extreme but has to be consistent. For most people, exercise starts off with a little of fanfare and after sometime, interest fades and the exercise regime stops.

For you, a brisk 45minutes walk everyday or taking the stairs rather than the lifts can make a remarkable difference.

Consistency on your part to your exercise regimen is the key to reducing the weight and therefore glycemic levels. Once your weight is under control, your glycemic levels too will be.

It is common to prescribe drugs for diabetes treatment. Type 2 however responds very well to exercise and a sensible diet.

If however sticking to a healthy exercise regimen does not appeal to you, it is advisable you stick to a drug regimen.

A Powerful Natural Method to Relieve and Heal Asthma

December 31, 2009

Are you an asthma sufferer or your close ones suffers from asthma? I believe it is agonizingly difficult for you to go on with your everyday lives without the fear of an attack looming overhead especially if your asthma is serious. Even more frustrating is the fact that since asthma is a chronic disease, there is no cure available. What you have are treatments and therapies that will help alleviate the condition but not totally cure it. Despite so, the various methods of treatment have varying degree of effectiveness and today I’m going to talk about one method which has shown to be effective in reducing asthma symptoms and the need for rescue medication.

Before that, lets’ briefly review the general concept of asthma relief techniques. These techniques generally take two sides, the approved medical techniques and the alternative medical techniques. Approved medical techniques or treatments are those that are generally prescribed by doctors to take care of the condition such as the common Ventolin tablet or inhaler. Whereas the alternative relief techniques are those that have been developed by scientist and individuals but have not yet gained medical acceptance.

Now, the technique that I’m going to talk about today is the Buteyko method, a natural method originated from the late Ukranian Dr Konstantin Buteyko who formulates its principles. When you discover the causes of asthma you can take appropriate action to heal it effectively. And Dr Buteyko discovered the cause.

In a nutshell, he discovered that life started on this planet, in an atmosphere of much higher levels of carbon dioxide than there are currently. He reasoned that all life still have that core of needing more carbon dioxide than is currently recognized. So an asthma attack is simply your body shutting down it’s supply of oxygen for a short period, so the carbon dioxide levels come up. Your neck muscles may constrict, making breathing difficult. Your chest may feel heavy, making inspiring difficult. Your airways may temporarily fill up with fluid, to prevent the oxygen getting into your blood.

Your body is highly intelligent and does what it takes to avoid disasters.

So what is the Buteyko method all about and how can you use it to relieve your asthma? Buteyko method is basically a series of breathing exercises that focus on nasal-breathing, breath-holding and relaxation. Its theory was that asthmatics “chronically over breathe” and the exercises are designed to teach asthmatics to breathe less. The goal is for you to retrain breathing to a normal pattern, akin to certain forms of Yoga.

Basically what you need to do is to learn to hold your breath. This may be difficult for people who regularly have an asthma attack. So you need to practice every day. Stop when it becomes uncomfortable. But increase your time every day, until you can comfortably hold your breathe for a few minutes.

Then when you feel an attack coming on, simply hold your breath. You’re likely to avoid the attack altogether. And, over time, the attacks are likely to be less severe, less often, until they disappear altogether. This mean you can avert asthma attacks simply breathing less over time.

Buteyko method works well and has no side effects and recently has been adopted by medical professionals internationally. The British Guideline on the Management of Asthma 2008 grants permission for health professionals in the United Kingdom to recommend Buteyko, stating that the method “may be considered to help patients control the symptoms of asthma”. The guideline also grades clinical research on Buteyko with a ‘B’ classification - indicating that high quality supporting clinical trials are available.

So if you have been suffering from asthma especially frequent serious attacks all these while, you might want to give Buteyko method a try especially as its’ a natural method without the use of any drugs and thus no side effects. Start practice the method today and you will be on your way to improving your quality of life with the threat of asthma gone. Live healthy :)

Why Most of the Worry Around Nail Fungus is Unwarranted

December 31, 2009

Nail fungus can be a worrying condition. This is not an arbitrary declaration. It is a conclusion one has to make, after analyzing internet search statistics around nail fungus. Apparently, most of the people doing searches on ‘nail fungus’ are clearly not just looking for information about it detachedly. Rather, as evident from their choice of search terms, they are worried about the condition as observed on themselves or their loved ones.

An assessment of the searches around nail fungus reveals that they tend to be motivated by worry about the potential effects of the condition on the ‘image’ of the person infected with them, as well as worry about the potential complications from the condition.

For the most part though, nail fungus tends not to be worthy of the much worry many people subject themselves to in its account.

With regard to its effect on image, for instance, there should be consolation in the fact that it tends to affect toe nails (and very rarely finger nails). Since toe nails are not that conspicuous, then, it should surely not be too big a source of worry. When it affects toe nails, it can hidden – till it heals – by making a vow not to wear any type of open shoes publicly in that duration of time. When it affects finger nails, which is thankfully very rarely, it becomes a bit trickier; for the finger nails can be hard to hide. To avoid awkward situations, one can make a ‘personal policy’ of not offering hand greetings for that duration.

There is further consolation in the fact that nail fungus is, as the name suggests, caused by fungus – and fungal conditions are among the easiest to treat. With the right treatment, it should be easy to get rid of the nail fungus within a month or so in most cases: hence making it unwarranted to get worried about it as if one were afflicted of a life threatening condition!

With regard to its potential for complications, yes, this remains there – but rarely ever manifests, especially if measures to combat it are taken in good time. In most cases, it is worth noting, nail fungus tends to disappear as the body’s natural immunity asserts itself over the virus causing the fungus. Even where that does not happen, not all cases of nail fungus that continue being present lead to complications. Complications are the exception, rather than the rule here. But before getting to the point where complications are a real possibility (which is typically only when the condition is left unattended for too long), there is a lot that can be done to avoid such a scenario.

For the most part, nail fungus – as mentioned earlier- responds quite well to treatments. Most people with the condition get relief with a few weeks of getting started on treatment. And there are numerous home remedies that work well for it, so that ‘treatment’ here doesn’t necessarily mean spending much money.

So in the final analysis, most of the worry people subject themselves to on account of nail fungus is quite unwarranted. But this is not to discount the need for urgent medical attention, as the risks still remain. It is just to say that one need not be overly worried, even as they seek for treatment for the condition.

Top 2 Reasons Why Nail Fungus Can Be Such a Worrying Condition

December 31, 2009

Exploring the internet search statistics carefully, it emerges that nail-fungus is one of the conditions around which there seems to be considerable interest. Indeed, it seems to be worry that people have regarding nail fungus. This is surprising, seeing that nail fungus tends not to be one what can be termed as ‘too serious’ conditions. Hence the question as to why nail fungus – while not typically ‘too serious’ a condition – is nonetheless so worrying.

1) One of the top 2 probable reasons nail fungus can be such a worrying condition is because it is a disfiguring condition. It is a condition which has been to render sufferers unable to wear open shoes: for fear of coming across as a people who don’t take good care of themselves (which is a bad reflection). Now living as we are in an extremely image conscious society, it follows that conditions that have potential to affect one’s appearance – in however marginal a manner- are likely to cause quite a bit of worry. Having seen a friend distressed about nail fungus, one finds themselves worried whether they could also get the condition. So they go searching online for information about causes of nail fungus – adding, once more, to the considerable number of people looking for information on the condition.

As it turns out, in today’s society, every aspect of a person’s appearance – from head to toe (literally) is assessed by others in a bid to determine where to ‘place’ him or her. Under this system, you naturally don’t want to be seen as having disfigured or flaked nails, as that would make you come out badly; and could actually cost you social (or even economic) opportunities.

2) The second probable reason as to why nail-fungus can be such a worrying condition is because there has been, for long, an aridity of information about it. So when people notice its effects on their body, they can’t quite know what is happening to them, triggering worry. Even when they are eventually handed a diagnosis that it is nail-fungus disfiguring their nails, they want to know what else it could do to them. So they go online looking for information looking for information like ‘nail fungus complications’ and so on, once again increasing the number of searches related to nail fungus.

As it turns out, most of us are ‘natural pessimists’ with a tendency to imagine the worst in every situation. Thus seeing on ourselves the effects of nail-fungus, and remembering that serious conditions tend to start in small ways, it would be understandable that we would want to know what next it could lead to. In this regard, all manner of scenarios play out in our minds. Could it lead to a need to have the whole finger amputated? Could it be a sign of impending gangrene? Could it lead to disability, by causing the whole foot or hand (as may be the case) to ‘rot’ and thus have to be cut off? Naturally, with thoughts like this, worry creeps in.

Top 7 Procedures Used in the Treatment of Warts

December 31, 2009

Warts are rough-surfaced tumors, growing on various locations on the skin. The fact that many of them tend to go away on their own within a few months notwithstanding, many people feel compelled to seek treatments for them with a view to eradicate them more quickly. The treatments also come in handy in the eradication of warts that have simply ‘refused’ to go away on their own, even after the time periods by which they should have done so.

There are two main routes used in the treatment of warts. One is through the use medications. The second one is through the use of procedures – which are our focus here.

1) One of the procedures that have shown considerable success in the treatment of warts is laser treatment. Here, the idea is to use the energy inherent in high-intensity light to get rid of the warts, through the selective absorption of water molecules in the warts (in the case of carbon dioxide lasers), and selective absorption of blood cells from the warts (in the case of pulse dye lasers). The beauty of laser treatment is that it can be extremely effective. The downside to laser treatment in the treatment of warts is that it can be both painful and expensive.

2) The second procedure used in the treatment of warts is curettage. It is a back to basics surgical treatment, where the warts (being tumors) are simply scrapped from their sites. Naturally, this is painful, and has to be done under anesthesia.

3) The third procedure used in the treatment of warts is coagulation. This is done using infrared rays. The idea behind this is pretty much like the idea behind laser treatment previously mentioned – with the infrared coagulation only being much cheaper. The pain remains though, as does the risk of leaving scars in the wake of the treatment.

4) The fourth procedure used in the treatment of warts is keratolysis (removal of dead skin cells – keratin), either chemically through the use of an agent like salyclic acid, or mechanically, using an agent like a blade or pumice (scrubbing) stone. Contrary to the way it sounds, this is one of the least painful procedures that can be used in getting rid of warts from the skin.

5) The fifth procedure used in the treatment of warts is electrodesiccation.

6) the sixth procedure used in the treatment of warts is injection of agents to biologically combat the warts, at the sites they manifest. Agents such as trichophyton antigents or candida have been shown to combat warts quite effectively, when directly injected where the warts are manifesting.

7) The seventh procedure that can be used in the treatment of warts is cryosurgery – which is more or less ‘freezing’ the warts, to effectively get rid of them. The idea here is to cut off the connection between the wart and the epidermal layer of the skin. This way, the wart – deprived of things it needs for life – has to eventually fall off, giving the person on whom it was resident relief.

Top 5 Viruses That Cause Warts

December 31, 2009

Warts are described as rough tumors that grow on the skin. They can be quite disconcerting to the person afflicted of them. Some can also be quite painful, as is the case with the so-called plantar warts – set apart by their lump-like appearance. And others can be quite awkward, as is the case with genital warts: which grow on the most ‘embarrassing’ of locations on the body.

Warts are caused by viral infections. This explains why they are rather tricky in curing, and why they have a tendency to recur in some cases – even after the best of treatments.

Now a common question asked with regard to warts is as to why there are so many types of them. The answer is mainly because they are caused by different strains of virus. True, it is the human pappiloma virus that causes warts, but then, different strains of it are responsible for the different types of the warts.

As it turns out, there are over (a whopping) 130 strains of the human pappiloma virus, the virus responsible for causing warts. This human pappiloma virus causes many other conditions, besides warts –including cervical cancer, and a number of other cancers affecting awkward parts on the body.

1) Now one strain of the human papilloma virus that is known to cause warts is the so-called ‘type 1.’ Type 1 of the human papilloma virus is culpable for the plantar variety of warts, which look like lumps with black specks on them. These can be painful, besides being disfiguring. The fact that they affect the pressure points on the soles might also make it difficult for people afflicted of them to walk comfortably.

2) Then there is ‘type 2’ of the human papilloma virus, which is culpable for some sorts of plantar warts (described earlier), mosaic warts (which are plantar warts occurring in clusters), and filiform warts. Filiform warts, as it turns, are those ‘finger-like’ warts that have a tendency to occur where one would least desire a wart (even if they were somehow desirable): on the eyelids and on the lips!

3) Further on, we have ‘type 3’ of the human papilloma virus, causing the other more tolerable warts: the plane warts (scientifically known as verucca plana). These look very much like blisters and tend to occur in huge numbers at once. When they occur on wrists and knees, they are quite tolerable. When they occur on the face and neck, they can be rather distressing; as they are there – open for ‘one and all’ to see.

4) ‘Type 6’ of the human papilloma virus is one of the strains of the virus responsible for genital warts. These are warts growing on the genital area – and can be extremely awkward.

5) ‘Type 11’ of the human papilloma virus is another one of the strains of the virus responsible for genital warts. Combined, type 6 and type 11 of the virus are to blame for almost 9 out of every 10 incidences of genital warts.

These are the top 5 viruses that causes warts.
