Home Gym: Disadvantages of Working Out at Home
October 30, 2009
You have made up your mind. You will get serious about getting in shape and building muscle to get that physique that you have always dreamed of. So now you think to yourself, “Should you invest in a home gym?” Well there are home gym advantages and there are disadvantages of working out at home.
In this article we will tackle some of the disadvantages of working out at home.
Immediate Costs
The immediate cost of a home gym is clearly a disadvantage when it comes to working out. Although it may be cheaper over the long term it can be a struggle to come up with the $400 – $1000 to purchase a home gym outright.
This can be more difficult than paying the $30-$40 per month costs of a gym membership. You can try to alleviate the cost of a home gym by searching for used equipment in the classified ads or garage sales. But it still may be more cost effective over the short term to purchase a gym membership.
Lack of Variety
Another obvious disadvantage of working out at a home gym is that you are not going to have the variety of equipment that you will find at a fitness center. So you are going to have to make do with whatever equipment that you have on hand and try to get the best workout possible at home.
You will usually find better equipment at a gym. This is especially true for isolation exercises when you begin looking to tone your muscles after you have already built up bulk.
Distractions
This third disadvantage my not be a hindrance for everyone but can be for others. Sometimes just being in the home can make you feel lazy. We often think of the home as a place of relaxation after a hard day’s work.
So if you stay in that mode when working out it can be too easy to take a break every few minutes to check out the game, grab a bite to eat, or get something to drink. Now don’t get me wrong there is nothing wrong with breaks. You need breaks between sets for most workouts but sometimes you can go overboard.
When working out at the gym, on the other hand, you can feed off the energy of others around you and even be motivated by the people in the gym that are where you aspire to be.
The reverse can also be true, though. Sometimes people are distracted at the gym. Those people are the ones who spend more time socializing at the gym than working out. So this one can go both ways.
So deciding whether you want to invest in a home gym is not a clear cut answer. There are home gym advantages, but there are also some disadvantages of working out at home to consider. Immediate costs, lack of variety of equipment, and distractions at home are a few to keep in mind.

Do Electronic Cigarettes Help You Quit Smoking?
October 30, 2009
The short answer is maybe. E-Cigarettes are not being marketed as smoking cessation devices by most companies due to the fact that they are not currently approved by the FDA. A lot of people have quit smoking using these devices though. As with anything that has to do with quit smoking the only way for you to quit is to actually try. If you don’t give it an honest shot you will never quit.
Are e-cigarettes expensive?
No. The initial outlay is usually more than what you need to spend for maintenance because you have to buy a starter kit. Once you have that you just have to maintain it. A good way of saving money is refilling your cartridges with e-liquid. It ends up being much cheaper than continually buying cartridges. The parts go bad and each part should last at least two weeks. The whole device and accessories should be considered consumable products.
Adding together what you spend on an e-cigarette and comparing it to actual cigarettes you’ll see there is definitely a big savings.
What about cancer?
A lot of the cancer causing ingredients in cigarettes are caused by combustion. As soon as you burn the tobacco it creates new chemicals which in turn are cancerous. E-cigarettes doesn’t create combustion or fire, it heats up a liquid and creates vapor so you avoid the whole combustion scenario. The creation of vapor by e-cigarettes is affectionately referred to as vaping.
How much are e-cigarettes?
You can buy e-cigarettes at your local mall at the kiosks for about $150 per kit or you can go online to a reputable supplier like http://cigarettereplacer.com and buy kits starting at $25 that are of equal or greater value than the mall kiosks.
What are the ingredients in the e-liquid or vapor juice?
E-liquid mainly consists of propylene glycol (used in food flavorings, toothpaste, fog machines and several other products), glycerine (used in several food and baking products), nicotine (which is a poison), and natural and artificial flavorings (food). The ingredients with exception to the nicotine are all considered safe by the FDA.
Nicotine is a poison?
Yes. Nicotine is used as an insecticide and in pure form is a deadly poison. It is especially dangerous for kids and pets. Of course if you already smoke cigarettes you already have this poison in your body which is why electronic cigarettes are only recommended for smokers. Nicotine is not a known carcinogen but it can aid the growth of cancer cells.
Are e-cigarettes safe?
Good question. The ingredients (except for the nicotine) are regarded as generally safe by the FDA, but there has been no research done on the long term effects of using electronic cigarettes. Some of the short term effects (for those successful in quitting cigarettes completely) are easier breathing, cleaner lungs, more stamina, ability to smell and taste better, and of course you smell better because you don’t have that cigarette smell on your body.
Some of the side effects are dry throat and dry eyes. These effects are usually gone after a few days due to the drying effects of the propylene glycol.

Tai Chi Chi Kung / Qi Gong
October 30, 2009
Tai Chi Chi Kung / Qi Gong by definition refers to Tai Chi energy work. In this post I will try to shed some light on what is meant by the Chi Kung / Qi Gong energy work aspect of the practice?
Tai Chi Chi Kung / Qi Gong is often taught as a set of moves separate from the Tai Chi sets. I have found that the vast majority of the time these other moves do not come with much of an explanation of why and how they are any different from the Tai Chi in the Tai Chi sets and that the moves by themselves do not impart any kind of ability different than what is already available in the Tai Chi sets.
So, what is Tai Chi Chi Kung / Qi Gong? First of all the Tai Chi moves are just Tai Chi choreography or moves until you begin to actually to practice the energetic aspects of the art. The real practice of Tai Chi is Chi Kung / Qi Gong. As soon as you start practicing the energetic aspects the Tai Chi so to speak then you are really practicing Tai Chi (probably with the moves) and not just the moves. At that same moment you are now practicing and or applying the Chi Kung / Qi Gong.
An obvious question at this point might be so what makes Tai Chi Chi Kung / Qi Gong? That is a very big question because the answer could and does fill books. I will try to shed some light on it here.
First of all in Tai Chi Chi Kung / Qi Gong are the physical structural alignments which are a necessity for the proper flow of energy through and around the body including through the acupuncture meridians of the body. This is part of the reason that so much emphasis gets put on the moves at the beginning of a students training and why it stays an important issue in training as one progresses. Incorrect and bad posture impedes and blocks energy flow so it is important to get it right. While you are learning and working on this you are not really performing Tai Chi yet but are simply learning something you need to understand to perform real Tai Chi.
One of the first things you learn in Tai Chi and that is a necessity in Tai Chi Chi Kung / Qi Gong is known as Sung which translates as relaxation both inside and out. Any tension in the body will impede or stop the flow of energy through the body. This can be structural tension (bad or improper positioning), physical tension (like holding tension in your shoulders or neck simply because you do not allow them to relax) or mental or emotional tension that is manifested in the body such as jaws clenched and a tight face when someone is having a bad day.
So, for proper Tai Chi and Tai Chi Chi Kung / Qi Gong you first need Sung relaxation and proper posture. Once you have these you can really perform Tai Chi and Tai Chi Chi Kung / Qi Gong.
The next step in solo Tai Chi practice is all Tai Chi Chi Kung / Qi Gong. You begin to work different aspects of energy within your Tai Chi both for fighting and for self defense purposes. There are approximately 36 different primary expressions of energy in Tai Chi. You use your mind to direct the internal movement and chi into an expression. That expression is known as Jing. Jing is an expression of Chi or energy hence it is energy work. A few jing expressions are well known and some are quite obscure.

Who is Debbie Siebers From Slim in 6?
October 30, 2009
Her face is splashed across some of Beachbody’s most successful products, ranging from the smash hit ‘Slim in Six’ to the ‘Slim Series’ and ‘Slim Series Express’. She was the fitness consultant for the FOX prime-time reality show ‘The Swan’, as well as appearing on FIT TV, the Discovery Health Channel, E! News Daily, and the Travel Channel. She has trained an endless series of celebrities, and continues to dominate the field of women’s fitness, looking perennially young and energetic. But who is Debbie Siebers? Where did she come from, and how did she get to the pinnacle of fitness success where she resides today?
Indubitably part of her charm is her wide, open smile and her Midwestern, all-American, girl-next-door persona which she credits to growing up in Little Chute, Wisconsin, a town of 10,000 souls and home to the Great Wisconsin Cheese Festival. She was a cheerleader at Little Chute High School, and admits to having suffered and battled with a compulsive eating disorder which pushed her to a size 12. It’s because of these years of struggling with her own health and fitness that Debbie claims to empathize and understand the trials those following her fitness programs undergo.
Eventually she moved from Little Chute to Los Angeles, where she decided to become involved with the fitness community and dedicate herself to improving the health of others. She began her career as a trainer for Body-By-Jake, a pioneer in popularizing personal fitness training in the entertainment. While Jake Steiner himself worked with such actors as Harrison Ford in helping him develop muscle tone for Indiana Jones, Debbie trained such clients as Amy Irving, Tori Spelling, Penny Marshall, Ann Spielberg and Paul Marciano.
Not content with the success she had already achieved at Body-By-Jake, she continued to provide private fitness training to her clients and began to branch out into television, participating in Samuel Goldwyn’s Health and Fitness Pilot, and was also featured with Jake on CNN’s Fitness Break. She also free-lanced out at Crunch Gym, Meridian Sports Club, For Women Only Gym and the Peninsula Hotel. It was an incredibly busy time for Debbie as she sought a means to break into the national level.
Her chance came when she met Carl Daikeler through a mutual friend. The pioneer of infomercials recognized Debbie’s potential, and soon she was contracted to create her first product, “Thin Thighs Guaranteed”. The success of this program led to a lasting business relationship with Carl, who recognized her talent and passion. Meanwhile she continued to plug the fitness circuit, becoming the spokesperson for Bowflex and hosting such fitness infomercials as ‘Body Vibes’ and ‘Superfood System’.
But all this was a prelude to her work with Beachbody. When Carl Daikeler created his company in the late 90’s he got back in touch with Debbie and commissioned her to create her landmark ‘Slim in 6’ fitness program. To gauge Slim in 6’s success, simply google it. The 23,600,000 page results are testament enough to her program’s popularity.
Philip Tucker is a Brazilian fitness expert who has been asked so many times ‘Does Slim in 6 work?’ that he’s decided to investigate Debbie Sieber’s Slim in 6 and relay the truth to the world!
Secret Fat Burning Strategies of a Napa Boot Camp
October 30, 2009
Since I’m a Napa boot camp instructor I’m constantly being asked how to lose weight fast and get in fantastic shape. But honestly, there are so many different strategies out there that practically everyone can use to reach their goals, but for those who I train, I’ll keep things super simple and very basic. With all the crazy strategies and all the fitness nuts out there in can be really confusing when it comes to finding a direct and simple action plan to get the best results possible. I want to share with you some of my favorite fat burning strategies in a simple and direct way so you can achieve your goals.
Use High Intensity Interval Training – It’s crazy that we’ve been imprinted with the notion that running at a slow pace for a long time will actually get us into the fantastic shape and will have the fat melting off of your bodies. The real secret to doing cardio is to crank up the intensity so that your heart rate is cranking and this will have a much higher metabolic cost than doing the boring steady state cardio stuff we’ve all been doing.
It’s a funny thing too, I read that by doing this specific type of training you can actually keep burning calories up to 38 hours after you workout, but with doing the old school style cardio you wouldn’t burn any after working out.
Stay Away From Sugars And White Flour – Eating a healthy meal with whole grains and whole wheat is much better for regulating your blood sugar levels than eating sugar and white flour. Having a good balance of blood sugar is vital to keeping your insulin levels in a good homeostasis. Instead of eating white pasta for dinner try substituting it for whole wheat pasta which will be much healthier. Also look to get rid of the white flour breads such as sourdough for your sandwiches and replace them with whole wheat or rye breads.
Eat Breakfast Every Morning – Ignoring breakfast is one of the biggest pet peeves I’ve found to be out there when it comes to nutrition. It’s actually the best thing for people to crank up their metabolism and give them the energy they need to get through the day. Drinking a cup of coffee isn’t going to be enough, next time try stove cooking some oatmeal and slicing some bananas into it. The fiber in the oatmeal will make you full and you’ll also give yourself some vital healthy carbohydrates to fuel your mind and your body.
Just to make things clear, these tips are designed to go with a great nutrition and work out program. I know from experience as a Napa Personal Trainer that even the littlest changes can make a huge difference, but there is no substitute for having a great nutrition program and working out hard in a gym or a boot camp a few times a week.
Josh Schlottman is a Napa Personal Trainer in California. At one time in his life he was 40 pounds overweight and after finally getting sick of it decided to make a change. Josh lost the weight as has started his own Napa Boot Camp.
What Does Fat and Glucose Metabolism Really Mean?
October 30, 2009
There perhaps isn’t a more frequently used word in the weight loss world than metabolism. It’s not uncommon to hear discussions of dieting successes or struggles in regards to whether their metabolism was fast or slow.
Even doctors will refer to your metabolism when they try to explain to you why water loss or starvation diets are not scientifically valid.
Unfortunately, most people simply do not understand the whole concept of metabolism and metabolic change. This is in part due to the amount of misinformation floating around on the internet so it is no wonder that there seems to be a lot of confusion on the subject.
The first thing you need to understand about the metabolism is that it isn’t a body part or organ. Metabolism is a process in which the body converts food into energy (fuel). Your body then uses this energy to perform a vast array of functions and it is also the energy you use to move and function.
I should also note here that the metabolic process is not just one single function, but it’s actually a term describing countless functions that take place within the body. Every single second of your life there are numerous chemical reactions taking place through metabolic processes.
Your metabolism is often referred to as a harmonizing process that works to achieve two functions: Anabolism and Catabolism.
The first function, Anabolism, is the process of creating cells and tissue. Every moment, your body is busy creating new cells to replace the dead or damaged ones. On the other hand, Catabolism, is the exact opposite. Instead of building new cells or tissue, this process breaks down cells for energy.
So as you can see, your metabolism is a process that takes care of two opposite functions: Using energy to create cells or breaking down cells to create energy.
When it comes to weight loss, the link between your metabolism and the amount of calories you consume becomes clearer. When you eat an excessive amount of food (energy) and your body cannot use up this energy at that particular time, it will become forced into creating cells with all that extra energy. It has no other option.
All those extra cells are added weight (fat). The whole deal between calories, your metabolism and weight gain all come down to do an excess of energy. When you consume too many calories from food, the majority of the time the body has to transform those calories into fat cells.
Sometimes though, they can be transformed into muscle tissue, which is usually a good thing for people watching their weight but this will generally require some form of exercise.
This is why people with more muscle mass burn more calories without doing anything. Their muscles require extra calories to be maintained and so they have a stronger metabolism. It is for this reason that building more lean muscle mass should be part of any overall program to lose weight or increase your metabolic rate.
The solution for permanent weight loss is to preserve as much muscle mass as possible while building it at the same time to speed up your metabolism. We recommend using the new fail-proof diet program called: from The Weight Loss Grail. You can begin this fantastic new diet right here: http://www.theweightlossgrail.com

Importance of First Aid Kits
October 30, 2009
First aid kits provide us easy access in providing first aid treatment for minor injuries and accidents. Basic first aid kits are most common for household use.
First aid kits are sets of important supplies used to provide first aid in case of injuries or emergency. The composition of a first aid kit can differ depending on its purpose. Some first aid kits include basic supplies while others may include medical equipments.
The most basic supplies in first aid kits include cotton, bandages, alcohol, tweezers, antibiotics and painkillers. It is enough to treat minor injuries such as minor cuts, burns and insect bites.
Specialized first aid kits are equipped with modern medical equipments on top of the basic supplies. These are intended for emergency disaster rescue units and medical teams. Some of the supplies and equipments included are disposable gloves, face shield, manual aspirator, pocket mask, butterfly stitches, goggles, emergency blanket and portable oxygen tanks.
Emergency kits are commonly contained in durable plastic containers. There are also improvised containers. The commercially available containers come in different sizes depending on its purpose and content. Some commercially manufactured containers are waterproof to protect the items inside. It is usually green with a printed white cross in accordance to the ISO standard. However, some organizations use the Red Cross symbol also. The uniform design makes it easy to be recognized in cases of emergency situations.
These kits are necessary and come in handy in outdoor activities. Camping is an enjoyable and adventurous trip but the activity opens the participants to danger also. You could have insect bites, be scratched with thorny leaves, get a headache because of changing weather conditions, or get a stomach ache.
These are unpredictable circumstances you should be prepared for. Your kit should contain items that could give first aid to cuts, bruises, sprains, headaches, and other common injuries suffered during such trips.
More extreme camping activities such as hiking, mounting climbing, biking, kayaking, hunting and other activities may require additional supply for first aid kit.
In this case it is very important to bring along first aid kits to be prepared in case of injuries and accidents. This is helpful especially if the camp site is in a remote area far from hospitals.
Consider the place, environment, nature of activities and how many people joining as you prepare your kit. Make sure you not only have complete items inside, but more importantly an adequate supply to accommodate everyone.
Be ready with different sizes of gauze bandage, rinse solutions, mosquito repellant, antibacterial ointments, cottons, various medicines, syringe, scissors, cotton, towels, ice bags, sun burn ointments and other essentials. Check the medicines for their expiry date and immediately replace them with new stocks. It is also ideal to put labels to all the supplies included in your kit so as to make it easier for everyone to distinguish the use of each supply.
Try to learn also the basic first aid treatments. This will provide you enough knowledge in performing first aid treatments for any type of injury or other emergency situations when it happens. If possible, include some booklets of basic first aid procedures in your kit.
Soon as you arrive in the camp site, you must show everybody where you are going to place the first aid kit so everyone will be informed. It is best to place it in a secure place away from moist and dust. It is must also be placed in an area where everyone can see it easily.
Remember that having a complete first aid kit can help prevent serious injuries and can even save lives. First aid kits provide everyone a safe and exciting camping adventure.

Top Benefits Of Web Marketing For Your Medical Practice
October 30, 2009
The benefits of web marketing are staggering and plentiful when it comes to the medical advertising of your medical practice. One of the main benefits of medical practice web marketing is the ability to reach a mass audience. Another benefit to web marketing is that you can advertise on other websites which are focused on medical issues. There are thousands of high profile medical based websites that people visit each and every day to find out information about various medical related topics. When you advertise your medical practice on these types of websites you will be reaching potential new patients who are actually looking for the services you are offering.
