Would You Get Eye Problems From Wearing Special Effects Lenses When You Don’t Have Eye Problems?
January 31, 2009
Decorative and special effects lenses are rapidly increasing in popularity. People who were unhappy with their regular eye color can now simply pop in a different colored lens and be instantly transformed into someone else for an evening or weekend, and that person will often gain a good bit of confidence with the transformation. It’s not uncommon for some people to have several different pairs of decorative or special effects lenses so they can change eye color to match different outfits for different occasions.
Special effects lenses are used in conjunction with Halloween and costume parties and in theater productions all year long. Some special effects lenses are the piece that makes a costume complete - like a cat’s eye.
All too often though, someone will buy a special effects lens from an unreliable source to save time and money and end up suffering with a painful eye problem because of it.
It’s true that decorative special effects contact lenses come in both prescription strengths as well as in zero-powered strengths so that people who don’t have vision problems can comfortably wear them - this, however, does not meant that you don’t have to be careful and take appropriate precautions before wearing them.
There’s a popular misconception that just because the contact lenses aren’t prescription strength that they are safe to be worn by anyone at any time without any risk to the wearer. Special effects contact lenses can, in reality, cause many eye problems, but there are some steps that someone who wants to wear them can take to ensure that they will be as safe as possible during the time that have the decorative contact lenses on.
What to do to be Safe
Before you sit down at your computer and order a pair of special effects lenses from some overseas store on the internet or run out and get a pair from a vending machine at a costume shop - you should know that these practices are likely to land you at the Optometrist with a nasty eye infection.
Your best bet to get a comfortable, high quality pair of lenses that will fit you properly is to schedule an appointment with a licensed eye care professional for an exam. Your eye exam will tell you for certain if it will be safe for you to wear lenses. If your exam shows that wearing contacts is safe for you, you’ll likely be able to get fitted and purchase the lenses that you want right at the office. This will ensure that you get the best quality product from someone who is supposed to be selling it. Even zero powered decorative contact lenses must be distributed through a licensed outlet, just because they aren’t designed to correct a vision problem doesn’t mean that anyone who wants to sell them is allowed to sell them.
If you already wear contacts regularly, you should still ask your regular eye care professional what their opinion of you wearing special effects lenses is. If you haven’t had an eye exam in a while, they may want to see you to make sure the decorative lenses that you chooses will be available in your prescription so as to not cause any problems.
If you decide that wearing special effects lenses is for you and you are cleared to do so by a licensed professional, be sure to follow the instructions for wearing and caring for your lenses. Just like wearing regular contact lenses, you shouldn’t wear them to bed, in the ocean or a pool and you should never swap lenses with anyone - even if they have the same prescription as you.
Even the slightest miss-step in following these instructions could lead to a serious eye problem - a problem much worse than not liking your current eye color.

Contact lenses are gaining much popularity. These contact lenses are used either for medical or cosmetic reasons. Some wear contact lenses to correct any visual impairment. Contact lenses are available for the myopic eyes. Myopic eyes have that visual impairment called Myopia. It is defined as nearsightedness and is a condition of the retina that when light enters the eye the light focus in front of the retina instead of hitting the retina directly into it. The cause of this nearsightedness or myopia is a steeper type or shape of the cornea. In myopia the shape of the eyes are longer than the normal length and shape of the eye. Nearsighted individuals can see things when they are brought closer to their eyes. For the cosmetic reasons, oh well everybody wants to look ravishing and stand in a crowd. January 30, 2009
Five years ago at the age of twenty five I thought I could eat whatever I wanted. Well, I did eat whatever I wanted. For most of my youth I never had trouble keeping my weight low even if I ate fast food, junk food and candy on most days. Sure I did some exercise in sports, but when I left for college I stopped exercising.
Now, I’m 31 years ago and over the past five years I’ve slowly and gradually gained 30 lbs! I was totally shocked by this. How could I have let this happen and not even realize it while it was happening? The weight was creeping up on me and I realized that the days of eating everything in sight were over.
Last June desperate to lose weight I went online seeking answers. What a Glass of Water, Shoe Shopping and Vacuuming Have in Common
January 30, 2009
There are two simple things you can do to keep your New Year’s Resolutions to get healthier and lose some weight: drink more water and keep moving. And I am not talking about vigorous exercises or 8 glasses of water every day. Here are tips how to easily drink more water and burn some extra calories.
To change our life=habits, we need to change our lifestyle, to change our lifestyle takes longer than we expect, that is why all diets fail. Let’s be realistic: to change something in your life and stick to it takes more than a week or two, and even more than two- three months, am I right?
If you ask me how to start drinking more water and move more the easy way, I would say:
start your day with a glass of water before breakfast and get a puppy – just kidding about the puppy or not.
I. Why and how to drink more water.
We lose water every day by breathing, sweating, urinating, having a bowel movement - this is how we cleanse/detox our body from toxins.
Drinking more water helps us get rid of constipation, lose weight, lower blood pressure, get more energy, get rid of headaches, have healthier skin and complexion, have better digestion, ease PMS symptoms, etc.
Did you know that migraines can be caused by dehydration? Lightheadedness, weakness, extreme fatigue, muscle cramps, headaches, nausea, tingling of the limbs are the symptoms of dehydration?
To drink more water is easier than you think. Let me explain how:drink a glass of water (warm with half a lemon preferably) before breakfast and a cup of tea during or after breakfast. It is already two glasses, and you haven’t even started your day yet! It is simple, isn’t it?
II. How to burn extra calories without sweat.((source: burncaloriesperhour.com)
Walking by itself will help you burn a lot of calories - maybe that is why European women are slimmer as well as New Yorkers.
Walking and calories :
up stairs -272 calories in 30 min
down stairs - 102 calories in 30 min
inside at work gathering things - 102 calories in 30 min
for pleasure - 119 calories in 30 min
under 2 mph (very slow, strolling) - 68 calories in 30 min
Don’t have time to walk? What about going shopping:
non-groceries - 78 calories in 30 min
groceries, without cart - 85 calories in 30 min
groceries, with cart - 78 calories in 30 min
carrying – groceries - 85 calories in 30 min
It is all about moving. You can burn calories even without leaving a house:
ironing - 78 calories in 30 min
cooking - 85 calories in 30 min
washing car - 102 calories in 30 min
vacuuming, around home - 119 calories in 30 min
sweeping, inside (e.g., floors) - 112 calories in 30 min
washing dishes - 78 calories in 30 min
mopping - 119 calories in 30 min
multiple household tasks, light - 85 calories in 30 min
cleaning - light (e.g., dusting) - 85 calories in 30 min
Don’t want to clean a house? Well, I can understand it. So what’s left?
Kissing and hugging. They will help you burn calories (34 cal. in 30 minutes), reduce stress and boost your immune system.
And speaking about reducing stress, sex will help you both with stress and calories: 30 to 50 calories in 30 minutes! So, more sex = less calories and less stress - please have it in mind.
As you can see, there are a lot of ways to move and burn calories. Start with baby steps, keep it simple and you will be surprised with the results:
one extra glass of water before breakfast gives you extra 365 glasses of water a year;
moving around the house or running errands can help you burn extra 3000 calories a month!
Let us be smart and take simple steps to feeling and looking fabulous.
And, as usual, don’t forget to breathe, smile and be happy.

Getting Rid of Heartburn
January 30, 2009
Heartburn, also known as pyrosis or acid reflux, can happen to anybody. While it ranges from the occasional incident to a chronic condition, at least 20 % of Americans suffer from it once a week. That is almost 20 million people in the USA. Gender and age usually do not matter, it can affect any one.
As misleading as the name might be, heartburn has nothing to with the actual human heart. In a case of heartburn the hydrochloric stomach acid finds its way back up to the esophagus, because of malfunction of the lower cardiac sphincter valve. This process leaves an unpleasant taste in the mouth and throat, often leaving a feeling of raw, sore throat. This feeling sometimes only lasts a couple of minutes, other times it can stay for a few hours.
The reasons for heartburn can range from eating the “wrong” foods, to medications, obesity and stress. In some cases heartburn is linked to gastroesophageal reflux disease. Figuring out what triggers your heartburn can help you prevent it. Smoking and alcohol also are amongst heart burn triggers. Often times pregnant women will suffer from heartburn.
In order to find relief from heart burn several methods can be tried. The treatment ranges from medications, a special diet, to alternative treatment. Often times changing one’s diet slightly offers quick relief. Avoiding acidy foods, like tomatoes, and foods high in fatty acids, like pizza or chili, helps prevent heartburn. For a severe case of heartburn usually medical treatment is sought, with prescriptions from a doctor. Sometimes surgery of the esophagus is sought after by some patients.
In milder cases often times alternative treatments are the answer. For example you can try sleeping with your head elevated at an angle, so it rises slightly above the feet and thus preventing the stomach acid from coming up. Some other prevention tips include not going to bed on a full stomach, not over eating and eating slowly. If you are overweight loosing weight usually relieves symptoms as well.
Prescription anti-acids often have unpleasant side affects if they are taken for an extensive amount of time. Anti-acids neutralize the acid in your stomach, which are actually healthy and needed for a normal digestive function. Thus diarrhea and constipation are the leading side affects for anti-acids.
Refluxamine was especially formulated to treat heartburn. It provides natural relief from occasional heartburn, indigestions, as well as sour, aching or upset stomachs. Refluxamine achieves all this by keeping your digestive system healthy. Instead of trying to reduce your stomach acid, which is actually healthy and good for your body, Refluxamine helps support the healthy function of stomach acid, making it a healthy alternative to other artificial medications against heartburn.
Results with Refluxamine vary but usually appear within five days of taking the supplement. The best part is that there are no side affects with this product. Refluxamine’s unique combination of vitamins, minerals and herbs has been scientifically proven for its health qualities and results. If you follow some of this advice you should find relief from your heartburn.

Easing Withdrawals When Trying To Stop Smoking
January 30, 2009
Any one who has ever quit smoking will tell you that cigarette withdrawal symptoms make you want to climb the walls!
Now I’m not saying that is true completely across the board because there are methods that reduce the withdrawal problems and thus make quitting much easier. But there are also some ways you can build your body up and reduce the problems.
So how do you reduce your cravings?
Replace your smoking habit with other activities.
If you feel the urge to snack, make it a piece of fruit or sugarless gum.
Keep your hands occupied. Instead of holding that cigarette, try doodling, working crossword puzzles or just holding something in your hand (like a pen or stress ball) that you can “play” with. The truth is, like a child that sucks it’s thumb, the act of holding a cigarette and putting it in your mouth brings you comfort. You’ve got to replace that “comfort” with something else.
Avoid extra caffeine.
Don’t replace one habit with another. Cigarette withdrawal can make you jittery and caffeine will only make it worse.
Make sure you get enough sleep.
When you get tired you will crave a cigarette or food. That’s because they both provide you with a mini burst of “energy.” If you’ve gotten enough sleep you won’t need these artificial stimulants.
Keep your tension low.
You can relieve tension these ways: relax by meditating (try a stop smoking hypnosis program like Wendi Friesen), taking a walk, take deep breaths, if possible work out, or soaking in a hot tub.
Find something (like talking to a good friend – who doesn’t smoke) to help you relax and replace the urge to smoke. It’s those times when we’re alone and “obsessing” over wanting a cigarette that the temptation overcomes us. Why do you think 12 step programs partner you with a sponsor?
Try to avoid places or things that remind you of smoking. These will tempt you to smoke or eat when you are not hungry.
Keep a journal of your feelings when you are tempted to smoke. Record of where and when you were tempted to smoke. These are your “triggers” and you can learn to avoid them.
Find something healthy to do to help you avoid the urge to smoke or eat when you are not hungry. Healthy can mean anything from exercise to talking with a friend or going out to a movie. Being sociable will help you to not think about smoking.
Do not panic about some modest weight gain. Some weight gain is normal because for the first time you can taste things.
If the cravings seem overwhelming remember – Quitting smoking is the best gift you can give yourself and your family.
Here is a list of withdrawal symptoms and things you can do to get past this time. Remember this won’t last forever.
Headaches: Try a warm shower or bath.
Trouble getting to sleep: Don’t drink any caffeine after 6 p.m.
Irregularity: Eat more fiber (raw fruits and vegetables, whole grain breads or cereal) And drink as much cold water a day as you can. The old adage was 6 – 8 glasses per day. The more water you drink the more you can “flush” your body of those nasty chemicals you’ve been putting in it.
Fatigue: Take a nap.
Hunger: Drink water or a sugar free drink. For a snack eat a low calorie snack. Sometimes hunger is just your body saying it’s thirsty. Drinking water or a sugar/caffeine free drink relieves the hunger without adding extra calories you don’t need. And it satisfies your brains need for something to “put in your mouth.”
Irritable: Try a relaxation technique, or a warm bath or walk.
Coughing: This bothers a lot of people who smoke. Try a cup of warm herbal tea, cough drops etc. As the tars and nicotine leave your body, so will the coughing.
Work at improving your eating habits: This gets easier as your taste returns to normal.
Increase your intake of whole grain products also lots of fresh fruits and vegetables.
More lean and low-fat dairy products.
Choose low-fat and lean foods.
Eat lots of fish, poultry and the like to give you the vitamins and other nutrients you need without the extra calories.
Use a vitamin replacement program like Smoke Deter to help your body replace those nutrients that smoking has deprived you of – and to ease the withdrawal symptoms.
Ways to discourage the urge to snack:
Leave the table immediately when you are finished.
Brush your teeth immediately, a good habit anyway.
Eat several small meals instead of larger meals. This will curb your between meal hunger.
Don’t skip meals. You will gain weight if you do because you’ll overeat when you finally do sit down to a meal.
Activities that can help:
Physical activity will help control your weight gain as well as make withdrawals easier. Plus just like the old American Indian sweat lodges, the more you sweat the more you purge your body and detoxify it.
Try to get at least 30 minutes a day of physical activity a day. It doesn’t have to be done all at once. Look around your home for things to do, gardening, housework, mowing the lawn, etc.

Is Rheumatoid Arthritis Worse in Women Than it is in Men?
January 30, 2009
Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common inflammatory form of arthritis and affects approximately 2.1 million Americans. For years, it has been common knowledge that rheumatoid arthritis is more common in women than it is in men. The ratio has ranged any where from 60-70 per cent women greater than men.
Now… a new Finnish study has proposed that rheumatoid arthritis tends to affect women much more aggressively than it does men.
In the study, women tended to complain much more of symptoms like aches, pains and tiredness even when they appeared to have the same level of disease as men.
Details of their study of over 6,000 patients from 25 countries was published in the January 2009 issue of Arthritis Research and Therapy.
In this study, men and women were asked to complete questionnaires about their disease and underwent x-rays and multiple laboratory tests to assess how advanced their arthritis was.
The lead researcher, Dr Tuulikki Sokka, stated, “The level of rheumatoid arthritis appears to be pretty much the same in both sexes but the symptoms of joint tenderness and things like that appear to be worse in women. We found that women tell us they have more severe symptoms.”
While it is tempting to hypothesize it is because women are “weaker”, which is what the Finnish researchers posited, it is more likely that other factors account for this finding.
It may be that muscle mass plays a role and that damage due to rheumatoid arthritis may become much more apparent and symptomatic because of this factor.
Hormonal imbalance may play a role since rheumatoid arthritis is not only more common in women but it tends to go into remission in women who become pregnant. This is a phenomenon that still defies explanation.
Women also tend to be less reticent to voice their complaints.
Another possibility voiced by British researchers commenting on the study suggested that women may actually have more severe disease than men do.
Measurements of disease activity are not gauged according to gender. In clinical trials, measurement of disease activity is the same whether the patient is male or female. This may skew results in a study of this magnitude.
Women may actually suffer from a more severe variant of the disease.
This hypothesis is supported by another observation.
The British researchers commented that when they looked at the data, they noted that women tended to have more erosions (destruction of bone) than men did.”

Using a TENS Machine For Pain Relief
January 30, 2009
As more and more alternative medicine is becoming popular, it’s not surprising that people would shy away from drugs to ease their pain and look for something that isn’t as likely to have side effects. The TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) machine is one of the more popular methods for easing pain and can now be found easily on the market.
While TENS can aid with all types of pain relief, it is particularly popular among those who suffer from chronic pain and who are usually becoming resistant to pharmaceutical painkillers. Using stronger and stronger drugs in order to make it through the day doesn’t mesh with everyone’s philosophy and that’s why they start looking for alternatives like TENS.
How It Works
Essentially, TENS machines work by shooting electrical pulses through electrodes that are attached to the skin. These pulses interrupt the electrical signals that are sent to the brain to let it know that your body is hurting. By interrupting them, the pain is eased or even eliminated.
There are two ways the TENS machine is thought to work.
Low Frequency: The lower frequencies, 2-5 Hz, are believed to cause the body to react. The reaction creates natural painkillers, or endorphins. The endorphins block the pain naturally and while popular, this isn’t the usual method of using TENS.
High Frequency: For more intense pain, higher frequencies, 90-130 Hz, work to actually interrupt those pain signals being sent to the brain. This is the most common use for the machine and while you start slow, it’s not uncommon to need to up the frequency to find the best block.
How to Use It
Your machine should come with detailed instructions, which should be followed. However, there are some general use instructions that we can list here.
Make sure the machine is off before applying the electrodes. You can test to ensure that it’s working by turning it on while holding the pads in your fingers. If it tingles, it’s working.
When putting the electrode pads on, be sure to avoid any sensitive or irritated areas and only apply to clean skin on either side of the pain. Electrodes need to be covered in conductive gel and must be placed at least an inch apart, preferably a little further. Tape them down if you plan to be moving around much.
Turn the machine on at its lowest setting and gradually turn it up until you can feel the tingle. You will need to feel a fairly strong sensation, but not painful. If the current causes muscles to contract, turn it down. The length of the session is up to you. It will need to be at least 45-60 min. but you can safely use the machine for up to 12 hours. At the end of the session, turn it off and remove the pads.
Who Can Use TENS
This technology isn’t best for everyone. Some people get more of a benefit than others and some won’t notice much of a difference in pain levels at all when using TENS. Also, if you are pregnant, have a pacemaker, epilepsy or a heart disease, you should stay away from this type of treatment. In some cases, TENS is used during labor, but in this case, you would need to consult a doctor.
As an alternative pain treatment, you’ll find that this works best on muscle pains, or those in the joints or caused by nerves. The electrical pulses are far less effective on things like headaches, chest pains or stomachaches and intestinal issues. That being said, there aren’t any real side effects from the use of this machine, so you can certainly experiment to find out whether or not it works for you.
TENS can be a useful alternative to drugs. It’s worth trying if you suffer from chronic pain.
Provider of a variety of high quality electronic muscle stimulators devices and TENS systems for at home use.
The Truth About Anxiety Medication Side Effects
January 30, 2009
People, who have serious problems with anxiety or stress and see their life falling apart because of that, may find a quick solution in pills and drugs. It really sounds great to take a medicine and feel better, but the fact is that anxiety medication side effects can be even worse than the initial problem. That’s why one needs to be very careful when turning to drugs to treat anxiety and panic attacks – although these problems may be debilitating, the safest method of treatment is through therapy although medications should not be discounted for short term relief while therapy is on-going.
The most common drugs used for the treatment of anxiety are the ones belonging to benzodiasepines, such as Xanax or Valium. Their main advantage is that they kick in really fast and they seem to help the patient deal with his problem very effectively. This is true, but only partially. Benzodiasepines are indeed popular because of their fast acting, but they are also massively associated with a series of disorders ranging from simple headaches and nausea to heavy addictions.
Actually benzodiasepines are known to trigger the development of dependency on them, which occurs normally after a period of tolerance and increased dosages. Combination of these pills with other drugs or alcohol could prove even lethal. For this reason, using medication as a long term way of dealing with anxiety is problematic. It is far better for the patient to seek therapy and deal with panic attacks psychologically.
There is an undeniable truth when it comes to those pills. The higher the dosage and the amount, the more pronounced the side effects will be. Of course not all people react the same way to drugs, so in some people even the lightest usage or small dose can have really negative results. IT is important to remember that none of us should take pills without consulting with an expert, and under no circumstances for a long period of time, no matter how severe his case might be.
People who are susceptible to depression, or have a history with psychological disorders should avoid anxiety medication as much as possible, because they are notorious for enhancing the sentiment of failure and fear after some time.
Although some drugs can be well tolerated when taken in small doses and for short time, there are some side effects that can appear. In most people anxiety medication side effects include nausea, nervousness, sleepiness, headaches, upset stomach and disturbed digestive system, lightheadness, and weight gain. Practically there is no way to avoid those symptoms except for avoiding the pills at the first place.
Sometimes cutting off pills could also be problematic, and provoke some side effects, mostly related to withdrawal symptoms. The most common is of course anxiety and stress, nervousness and even shaking or trembling and people should be aware that this is the normal reaction of the body as it is trying to detoxicate itself. Anxiety medication should not be taken without the advice of a doctor, and only if other therapies fail to succeed.
You don?t need to suffer with debilitating anxiety and panic attacks anymore. If you?re ready to get rid of your anxiety medications and find a way to cure anxiety attacks without drugs, then visit Cure Anxiety Attacks.
Setting Healthy Weight Loss Goals
January 30, 2009
I am a huge believer in having goals. While some people spend too much time setting goals and not enough time achieving them, most people do not put much thought into goal-setting. When it comes to weight loss, it is especially important to set realistic goals.
By realistic, I do not mean “I want to lose 30 pounds in 30 days.” Oh, I’ve seen those claims many times. I’ve seen the claims of marketers that say their products can do that for you. I’ve also seen the claims of people that have said they can accomplish that feat. Can you lose 30 pounds in 30 days? Sure, but it is not healthy at all and will almost certainly return at some point in the near future. A good portion of this extreme weight loss will be in the form of muscle and that will kill your metabolic rate. For more on this, check my article on “Weight Loss vs. Fat Loss”.
So, what is a realistic amount of fat one can lose in 30 days? I would say, stick to the mantra of 1-2 pounds per week. That would mean about 4-8 pounds per month. Now, that may not sound like much, but let’s put it into a bit of perspective. Say you were to only lose one pound of fat each week. After one year, that would be 52 pounds! What if you had started losing one pound per week a year ago? Now imagine yourself this time next year at 52 pounds lighter. You may not even need to lose that much weight.
The key to weight loss goals is patience, realism, and a constant effort toward achieving them. At two pounds of body fat per week, after 13 weeks (3 months), you will have lost 26 pounds of body fat. That is very significant. It requires a lot of effort over the course of three months, but it is definitely attainable. If you have a significant amount of weight to lose, this would be a good goal to start with. Close to 30 pounds in three months is much more realistic that 30 pounds in 30 days.
One note that I should make is concerning detoxification diets. I am actually a big proponent of the detoxification process as long as it is done properly. I will deal with this subject in a future article, but for now you should know that it involves eliminating certain foods from your diet (while sometimes adding certain natural supplements) in order to rid your body of toxins that have been stored over time. The detoxification process can lead to a large drop in excess water weight in a short period of time. This would mean that you may lose an additional 5-10 pounds of weight on top of the 1-2 pounds per week of body fat in the first 2-4 weeks. It is not an easy process, but it is definitely healthy and certainly worth the effort.
Other than that, I would recommend sticking to two pounds per week for a short-term aggressive approach and about 1.5 pounds per week for a longer-term goal. Remember that these pounds add up over time. Don’t check the scale every day as you will get discouraged quickly. Rather, stick to checking every two to four weeks. Also, take some measurement of your body and take note of how your clothes are fitting. Often, these are better indications of how your body is changing. Take pride in these accomplishments and don’t stress over the numbers.
Set goals. Make them aggressive but attainable. Set both short and long term goals and then go take action on them. Most importantly, be consistent because your efforts really will add up all the time. That will make you very happy in the end.
