Why You’re Always Feeling Tired Explained at Last
November 29, 2008
As women, we all know how quick we are to overdo it… work, home, family, stressful commutes, lack of sleep all contribute to the sensation of “always feeling tired” that seems to dog us these days.
Consistently getting 5 to 6 hours of sleep a night is going to catch up to you sooner or later, and your body will force you to rest. If you’re getting a good 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night, and still feeling sluggish and tired it’s time to look for another explanation, beyond lack of sleep, that might be causing your fatigue.
Fatigue that lasts for a week (or longer) can actually be a sign of serious illness… or it can signal a minor problem that’s easy to correct. Whichever the case, you need to know, or you’ll never feel rested and refreshed. There’s no reason to delay finding out what’s happening. A visit to your doctor will give you the answer (and reassurances) that you need.
Here are some things your doctor may consider as contributing to your fatigue…
1) Anemia – especially if you’re in your reproductive years, can be a cause of fatigue. The monthly blood loss leads to a deficiency of hemoglobin – the iron rich protein in red blood cells that delivers oxygen to all parts of the body. Fatigue is a sign that the tissues and organs are not getting enough oxygen. The solution is an iron supplement or adding iron rich foods like broccoli, spinach and red meat to your meal plan.
2) Caffeine Overload – the well used stimulant of our times can turn on you, and instead of giving you that quick burst of energy, it can have exactly the opposite effect. A study published in the journal US Pharmacist by W. Stephen Pray, PhD., RPh, found that continued doses of caffeine led to fatigue. Add more caffeine and the fatigue gets worse too. The best (though hardest) thing you can do for yourself is to reduce your intake – cutting coffee, chocolate, tea, soda and any over the counter medication that contain caffeine. But do so gradually, so as to avoid the unpleasantness of sudden withdrawals.
3) Food Allergies – are believed by some doctors to take energy away from the body, and even if they’re mild, these intolerances can make you tired. Eat the troublesome food a lot, and you’ll be fatigued all the time. If you think allergies to certain foods may be the source of your exhaustion, try an Elimination Diet to cut out foods and additives for a time, then reintroduce them one at a time and watch for the fatigue to return. You might also speak to your doctor about a food allergy test, or try a home test like ALCAT.
4) Heart disease – as yet undiagnosed, could be the culprit behind your lingering fatigue – especially if you get exhausted after activities that used to be easy. If you’re wiped out after ordinary tasks, like vacuuming, doing yard work or at the end of your workday, it’s time for a visit to your doctor. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in women. These signs, though likely nothing to worry about, may be your first clue that something is amiss, and your best chance to get the medications or treatment that help to correct the problem and restore your energy.
5) Hypothyroidism – by age 60 about 17% of women will have a thyroid disorder and not even know it. If you find that you’re fatigued, generally sluggish, run down and maybe a bit depressed to boot the cause may be hypothyroidism. Your thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland in your neck that controls the speed at which your body works… also known as your metabolism. Blood tests for both T3 and T4 are the best way to detect this condition, safe synthetic hormones can then be administered.
6) Sleep Apnea – can be a problem if you’re getting enough sleep but continue to feel constant fatigue. This sleep disorder causes you to momentarily stop breathing often over and over again during the night. Each time your breathing stops, your sleep cycle is disturbed as you are jolted awake, though you’re usually not aware this is happening. A visit to a sleep lab or care by a specialist who focuses on sleep apnea are the best ways to get diagnosed and be on your way to the restful, restorative sleep your body needs.
7) Urinary Tract Infections – can sometimes present without the hallmark burning and urgency, fatigue being the symptom that brings a patient to her doctor. UTI’s are caused by bacteria being brought into the urinary tract (a risk when you wipe back to front) and causing problems. If your doctor suspects an infection without the customary symptoms, a simple urine test can deliver the answer and then antibiotics can be prescribed. If you’re a woman who suffers chronic UTI’s, you might want to ask about low dose antibiotic therapy to prevent the infection from coming back.
If, after checking out all these physical possibilities, you have no answers, don’t despair. Maybe your body is trying to let you know you’re doing too much… pushing to hard. After all, complaints of always feeling tired is common in our ‘got to be everywhere and do everything world’. Recognizing your limitations, letting go (or saying “no” judiciously) and slowing down accordingly, might just be enough to help lift the fatigue that’s become a part of your life.

Just a Little Activity Helps Severely Obese Get the Benefits of Exercise
November 29, 2008
You’ve heard time and time again how good exercise is for you… but if you’re carrying a few extra pounds working out like a maniac isn’t something you’re probably comfortable doing. Thankfully new research says that you don’t have to work up a sweat to get the benefits of exercise.
You see, the study presented at the Obesity Society annual scientific meeting in early October found that even a little bit of exercise – 1 hour a week – delivers an improvement in quality of life and makes everyday tasks easier for severely obese people. Even those who think they’re past caring (or helping) should be encouraged to get active according to the results of this study.
“This study speaks to the importance of people who are overweight, even severely overweight, paying attention to the fact that increasing their activity even a little bit can make their day to day life better,” says Dr. Martin Binks, research director of the Duke Diet and Fitness Center, a residential weight loss program at Duke University Medical Center.
Founded in 1969, the Duke Diet and Fitness Center is one of America’s longest running treatment centers for people who deal with excess weight, a sedentary lifestyle and associated health problems.
Dr. Binks and his team looked at the relationship between current activity and quality of life in about 1,200 severely obese men and women who entered the Duke weight loss program.
These subjects were 100 pounds overweight and in their pre-program assessment reported that they were active for just about one hour a week. Quality of life and ease of daily living were also noted.
Even this minor level of activity brought benefits. The subjects felt better.
The study participants didn’t think “workout” but rather just being more active as part of their everyday routine.
Left untreated, obesity can, and often does, lead to poor health. But beyond the burden to your body, being so heavy opens you up to self-esteem challenges like feeling unattractive, as well as the thinly veiled social stigma of being so overweight. And if, like so many people, you’re trying to lose the weight and failing, you’re likely blaming yourself – another thing certain to sabotage your confidence.
What you need to understand is that the trouble with obesity is in the odds – 95% of those who manage to lose the extra weight regain all they lost within 5 years. Imagine all that effort and being right back where you started in just a few years?
Instead, many in healthcare are pointing out (and rightly so considering soaring obesity rates) that treatment focused on diet and achieving an ideal weight… instead of living an all around healthy lifestyle, clearly isn’t working for the long term.
Obesity is the type of condition, similar to diabetes and high blood pressure that may need constant treatment and monitoring. Perhaps by treating obesity just as we do other chronic diseases, we can find effective, lasting ways to help patients manage weight.
Even a modest weight loss of 5-10% of your current body weight, maintained long term, can have tremendous benefits not only to overall health, but your everyday life as well. Getting active, even just a little bit every day, can be that all important first step in gaining the benefits of exercise.

Functional Foods: Boost Your Health With New Purple Tomatoes
November 29, 2008
Is the world really ready for the latest in functional foods – the purple tomato?
A team out of the John Innes Centre, Norwich is asking us to face just this question as they’ve developed a new breed of tomato, rich in an antioxidant pigment known as anthocyanin that is believed to offer protection from cancer.
The British researchers took two genes known to induce production of anthocyanin from the snapdragon plant and put them into the tomato. As not one of the human researchers had the nerve to eat the surprisingly purple fruit that resulted, the tomatoes were fed to cancer prone mice instead. Amazingly the animals lived for an average of 182 days, compared to just 142 days for mice fed a standard diet and 146 days for mice fed normal red tomatoes.
Seems like those purple tomatoes did something.
“I think it is one of the first genetically modified foods that’s seen to have a consumer advantage,” explains plant biologist Cathie Martin who helped to create the tomato and has been fielding media calls since the publication of the study in Nature Biotechnology.
Anthocyanin is the substance that is found in grapes, blackberries, blueberries and even cranberries and has been shown to slow down the growth of colon cancer cells. Other evidence suggests that the colorful pigments in these berries can help boost eyesight, act as an anti-inflammatory and may even hold off diabetes and reduce the risk of obesity.
Experts also suspect the substance is able to offer protection against cardiovascular disease and many age related degenerative diseases.
Those who are uncomfortable with eating genetically altered foods (sometimes called functional food) point to the obvious solution. To get the health benefits of anthocyanin, eat the natural sources of the substance – grapes, berries and the like.
Healthy, varied sources of nutrients are always the best choice. Looking for one “superfood” plays into the idea that there are “miracle cures” for health issues. What’s more, tomatoes are already nutrient rich – chock full of antioxidant compounds like lycopene and flavonoids. Do we really need to put time and effort into making them better?
Besides the striking purple color, researchers insist what makes this new breed of purple tomatoes so incredible is that the healthful anthocyanins are in both the skin and the flesh of the fruit. This makes it more likely that sauces made our of these tomatoes would keep the healthful benefits. Although it’s hard to imagine purple pizza… As for the taste… well Martin says she’s tasted it and you can’t tell the flavor from a regular tomato, there is no berry taste at all.
The British researchers hope they’ve made a start toward producing a new generation of “functional foods” to combat a wide range of serious diseases, cancer included. The purple tomato (still a long way from any produce department in store) would join omega-3 fatty acid added to eggs (to help heart disease) and probiotics in yogurt (to help digestive function) already available on store shelves.

Fish For Your Heart
November 28, 2008
Is there enough fish in your diet? The American Heart Association recommends that we should consume at least two meals per week that contain fish. The reason for this recommendation is that fish are generally rich in omega-3 fatty acids. A diet that contains fish promotes a healthy heart, helps us to maintain our optimum weight and insures overall better health.
All fish do not contain the same amount of omega-3 fatty acids. Salmon contains the greatest amount per serving, but all fish do contain this essential dietary ingredient. There are many studies that have been completed and a number are underway that suggest that Americans do not consume enough fish. Omega-3 fatty acids, in addition to helping one to maintain a healthy heart, also have other beneficial effects.
Studies indicate that a diet that consists of fish with their inherent high content of omega-3 fatty acids will help one to ward off a series of ailments. This fatty acid is associated with better brain function, promotes better eye health and may help one to avoid certain cancers as well as a number of other ailments associated with aging such as rheumatism and kidney disease.
In addition to the aforementioned qualities associated with seafood, fish are normally lower in fat and calories than beef, pork or poultry products. One can enjoy a fulfilling meal of fish and consume less calories which obviously has implications for maintaining a healthy weight.
Our diets should be diverse to insure that we are consuming the appropriate quantities of vitamins and minerals that are essential for the maintenance and development of strong bodies and the consumption of fish and other seafoods will help us to achieve that goal. It’s easy, simple to enjoy a tuna fish sandwich once or twice a week or select from an vast array of other fish that are easily available at the local grocer.
Eating Fish
Fish is a food that is actually very easy to prepare and cook. One of the easiest and healthiest ways to cook fish is to bake or broil it. You can marinate it or just baste it with a sauce or marinade.
Here are a few sauce and marinade ideas:
Lemon Butter – lemon juice, butter, and a few herbs and mild spices such as parsley, garlic, and onion.
Sweet and sour – Make a thin sweet and sour sauce.
Citrus Teriyaki – make a marinade using orange juice, teriyaki sauce, a splash of honey, garlic and other spices. This robust marinade is especially tasty with Mahi-mahi or other meaty fish steaks.
Those are just a few ideas – you can make a wide variety of sauces, marinades, and rubs for your fish. The options are endless.
When cooking your fish, always opt for baking or broiling over frying. Fried fish is not healthy like broiled or baked fish. Baking fish is probably the easiest option – it’s easier to bake it and get it done without burning it. Baking is slower than broiling, though. So start eating fish…and enjoy!

Tips For Walking For Health
November 28, 2008
Everyone knows that exercise is essential for good health. Our bodies require both physical and mental exercise to maintain good health. There are many ways to exercise, but only a few low stress ways to exercise.
A low physical stress activity that is easily available to all is walking. A brisk 30 minute walk on a daily basis will improve our blood circulation as well as our lung function. Walking also burns calories and helps us to maintain an optimum weight. Walking is usually not harsh on the body’s joints or any other body parts.
When walking, try to exercise in an area with relatively clean air and try to avoid hard pavement when possible. Grass or dirt is preferable to concrete or asphalt.
The idea is to walk fast enough for one’s heartbeat to achieve between 50% and 75% of the maximum. When first starting a walking exercise program it is best to establish a goal of 50% of one’s maximum heartbeat and then gradually work up to 75% .
It is easy to determine the maximum heartbeat for a healthy person. It is 220 minus your age. A healthy 30 year-old person’s maximum heartbeat would be 220-30 = 190. In this example, of a 30 year-old person just starting a walking for health program, the goal is to maintain a heartbeat of 50% of maximum or 95 beats per minute.
To check your heartbeat, stop momentarily and place two fingers on your carotid artery located on your neck on either side of the center (Adams apple). You then simply count the beats for 10 seconds and multiply by six. If the heartbeat is too fast, it would be prudent to slow down a bit or if it is too slow then one should increase their walking pace.
The idea with any walking for health program is to start slowly and then gradually increase the pace or duration of the walk. The positive health benefits of a walking program, in addition to the obvious improvements in heart and lung health, are that one will sleep more restfully and be able to more effectively engage in activities that require concentration. The benefits of walking for better health are well documented and it is an activity that can be done individually or with family and friends. Have fun and achieve better health!
Tips For Making Walking More Enjoyable
Walk with friends. Find an exercise buddy that will go walking with you. This allows you to talk and enjoy good company while you are walking.
Listen to music. Find some great music to listen to while you walk, and put it on your MP3 player or portable CD player.
Find scenic walking trails. You likely have some parks or trails near you that would offer you great scenery while you walk. Walking alongside a river or stream can be particularly enjoyable.
Walk your pet. If you have a dog, take he or she for walks with you when you go for a walk. You can enjoy a bit of companionship and play with your dog while you walk.

Elliptical Machines – What’s New For 2009 Elliptical Trainers
November 28, 2008
Looking at elliptical machines? This is the time of year that most people choose to buy an elliptical trainer.
The good news for you is that elliptical trainers get better every year. There are 2 reasons for this:
#1) Competition – With more manufacturers entering the market, competition is fierce. Elliptical companies are scrambling to provide the best fitness gadgets and designs that they can – for as low a price as they can.
High competition may make it confusing for some buyers (so many choices!) However it’s good in the sense that you’re getting more bang for your buck than ever before.
#2) Buyers Researching On The Net – The rise of the Internet has helped manufacturers improve their models and give buyers more of what they want.
I regularly speak to elliptical manufacturers who are upgrading their models because of what they’ve read on my site or other review sites.
New 2009 Elliptical Machines – What’s Around The Corner:
So what can you expect for the new 2009 elliptical machines? Here are the 3main ways I think elliptical machines will improve in the new year:
1) More Incline Models – Incline (also called Ramp or Power Ramp) used to be a feature only offered on $3000+ Precor models (Precor actually engineered the first elliptical with incline – called CrossRamp).
Incline is different from resistance. Resistance makes it harder or easier to push through the elliptical motion. Incline actually changes the slope of the elliptical pattern.
The advantage to this is that you work different sets of muscles, get a better overall workout and avoid overtraining. Incline has been trickling into the home market a little bit over the years however, you’ll probably find that it will become a standard feature for the high end home brands in the New Year.
2) Better Online Pricing – While buying online has offered better prices for the past few years, there are more manufacturers now jumping on the bandwagon, selling direct to the consumer.
Margins are tight and manufacturers are looking for any chance they can get to beat out the competition. This will probably mean more direct-to-consumer selling with lower prices.
The buyer wins because they save money on store markup. Plus they don’t have to drive around all over town to see a few different models. They just sit in their living room and shop from a much larger range of different models. With more to choose from, chances are higher that they’ll find a better value buy.
3) More Commercial Grade Entertainment Goodies & Fitness Tools – At the last fitness trade show I attended, there were some mind-blowing new features built into the new commercial ellipticals. TVs, stereos, iPod hookups and charging stations, interactive workout programs – it was like having your own personal trainer built into your elliptical.
And usually what starts in the commercial market, filters down to the home market. (For example, treadmills with TV’s started in the commercial market and now there are several home units offering built-in TVs).
Manufacturers are looking for an edge – and turning a boring old elliptical into your personal entertainment station is a good way to get it.
While built-in TVs may still take a while, you’re already seeing iPod docks, built in speakers and interactive workout programs in home units. With the new 2009 models you’ll probably see more new elliptical models offering these entertainment goodies.
So those are 3 predictions for the new elliptical machines coming out in the New Year. If you’re looking for new 2009 models, they usually start trickling out around late November of 2008 and into January 2009.
Just remember to choose a high quality brand and properly designed elliptical that suits your fitness needs.

Contact Lenses For Young People
November 28, 2008
Hi! You look beautiful with your eyeglasses. Want to be able to see in the rain, though, like when you’re playing sports?
Contact lenses have flooded the market. They can be easily placed on the cornea of your eyes, enabling vision even in the rain. And while they may be tough to put in your eyes at first, it gets easier with practice.
Here are more points to ponder about contacts:
1) Chemists from Czechoslovakia invented the contact lens in 1961. The main advantage with contact lens is the comfort factor.
2) Each person has different power in the eye and therefore contact lenses with varying powers are available with the eye care practitioner.
3) If your eye care practitioner detects astigmatism in your eyes, he may gives you toric soft contact lenses to correct the problem.
4) Contact lenses come in different shades. Choose one with your eye color or a complimentary tone, your choice.
5) Even if you have the problem of dry eyes, there are many different combinations of contact lens and solutions.
6) Cleaning, the quality of lens and wearing habits go hand in hand in providing your eyes with good care.
7) Contact lenses like the extreme H2O, biomedics XC and proclear compatibles have been designed specially for dry eyes.
If you are a sportsman or woman, contact lenses can help; they provide a clear stable vision and wider field of view than eyeglasses. Contact lenses also don’t get fogged up or slip down during games.
9) Some rigid gas permeable contact lenses allow dust to accumulate below the surface and create an irritation to the eye. This problem can be solved by using contact lens drops or rinsing the lens with solution. Or go soft; soft contact lenses fit closer to the eyes.
10) Negligence in cleaning the lenses may blur the eyesight and may develop into an itching sensation, leading to possible infection. Enzymatic cleaners help remove protein deposits from contact lenses, thereby keeping them clear and transparent.
11) You are advised by the eye care practitioner not to share your contact lens with others.
12) You should not wear your lenses for longer periods than your eye doctor recommends because there are chances that you may deprive your eyes of the correct oxygen supply leading to possible damage of the cornea.
13) Rigid gas permeable contact lenses have their advantages too. They help in controlling myopia in children. They provide sharper vision than soft contact lenses and are more durable. They are economical too. Rigid gas permeable lenses correct near sightedness, far sightedness and astigmatism. Hybrid contact lenses are a combination of Rigid Gas Permeable lens at the center, providing a clear and crisp vision and greater comfort.
14) Colored contact lenses can be used by teens who don’t need to correct vision but want to enhance the eye focus or change the eye color. For those particular about ultimate convenience, daily disposable types of contact lens may be the best option.
15) Awesome facts about contacts are:
